Aureum: A Roman Treasure Hunt (1998) is one of those games that was deliberately designed to be so difficult that pretty much nobody could ever finish it. That’s because it was one of those games that offered actual prizes for completing it including a trip to the Mediterranean, and for the final winner, a treasure chest full of Roman gold coins. To my knowledge, nobody ever finished more than two of the four sections of the game and after two years the offered prizes were pulled amidst some scandal.

As an aside, the earliest game I know of to offer prizes in such a manner is an old Apple II game I own called Alkemstone (1981).

Anyway, for those who are curious, but have no intentions of actually trying to acquire this game or solve any of the puzzles in it, the answer to the above screenshot is Amanita Caesarea. Not very difficult, but that’s only the first part of a four part answer that you have to derive from the screenshot and there are 40 more puzzles to go.
