The Madness of Roland (1994) is purely an interactive novel. There are no puzzles. You do get to explore the story from the point of view of several different characters and in whatever order you like though. Personally, I found this non-linearity to be a negative that made the story feel disjointed and I couldn’t really get into it. Sure, I could have forced myself to stick to one character at a time, but the interface presents all the story paths to you for each chapter at once, making it unlikely that you’ll try to do so. It is a little bizarre at times, contains mature content, and not too bad overall, but not really my thing.

I did that the second time I played it.

I liked the story, the concept of the then new multimedia experience, the graphics. I might feel different now in 2013, and I wouldn’t mind replaying it but I can’t get it to run.

I got it working to take that shot. Here’s how:

1) Install DOSBox 0.74
2) Install Windows 3.11 + video and sound drivers (Instructions Here)
3) Run Windows and Install Madness of Roland
4) Back up file QTMOVIE.VBX in c:\Roland directory
5) Install QuickTime 2.12 (16 bit) and delete everything it asks to.
6) Copy QTMOVIE.VBX back to c:\Roland directory
7) Run game and select no when the error pops up.
8) Enjoy the game.

I don’t know if you are willing to go through that much work, but there it is.

It’s always good to have a working version of Windows 3.11 for old adventure games though…

Thanks for the instructions, Bastich! Thumbs Up

BTW, that particular screenshot was used for the jewel case (back). It’s a weird version of the painting L’Ange du Foyer. You could have saved yourself some trouble.

Yes, I’d love to be able to play some of the older adventures, like Panic in the Park.
