Ceremony of Innocence (1997) is one of those games that gets tossed under the adventure game genre simply because it doesn’t fit anywhere else. It’s a multimedia title based on the Griffin and Sabine novels by Nick Bantock about two lovers who communicate via postcards from opposite ends of the globe.

Gameplay consists of trying to unlock the text of each postcard by interacting with the artwork in various ways. It’s well done and I enjoyed it at the time for what it was, but it’s more of an interactive novel than a game and hence not really a title that will appeal to those looking for a more traditional adventure game experience.

I welcome those games. Alice: An Interactive Museum and its interactive paintings doesn’t fit in the traditional categories either.

It’s a beautiful game and I loved the interactive postcards.  The story seemed intriguing enough at first and the voiceacting is terrific (Paul McGann, Isabella Rossellini and Ben Kingsley), but I lost interest in the end. Don’t know why, I usually like mysterious stories with different interpretations.

That screenshot makes me think of Monty Python’s Complete Waste of Time. Tongue

There sure is something Pythonesque about this game. Being a HUGE Python/surreal/wacky stuff fan, I put it on my “play it, you idiot!” list years ago.

I would really like to give it a try but I’m too busy (have a lot of interests), too lazy, too wishy-washy and generally play games only when I feel it’s the right time for doing so and for me it’s seldom a right time to play anything (why else do you think I played less then 100 AG’s - probably less than 90, actually - in 14 years?).

Edit: And then there are people like that girl that claims she had played ALL the Nancy Drew games (!??!?) in about a month (without a walkthrough). Jesus.

Thanks! Rarely do I buy overseas, but $9US for a game that’s selling for $80 on U.S. soil…...getting shipping price!

As do I. I don’t really bother with strict genre distinctions. I include everything from interactive novels to survival horror in my definition of “adventure”. I made the distinction above purely for the benefit of those who are picky about such things.
