Adventure Game Scene of the Day — Sunday 17 November 2013
Here I am getting eaten by a great white shark in this red herring, insta-death location in The Adventures of Down Under Dan (1995). You die frequently in this game and often with no warning whatsoever. It also has a bit of a survival horror vibe to the mine section which requires that you shoot large spiders with a gun. I hope your reflexes are good.
It’s even more fun when you enter the mine too early and become trapped in a dead end without knowing it, fleeing spiders in the maze for hours (because you don’t have a gun), and trying to map it out and find the exit that doesn’t exist yet since you don’t have the items necessary to find it and have to start the game over from the very beginning. Do I sound bitter? Because I most definitely am. Screw this game!
Down Under Dan is on my long list of games I didn’t finish and never will. Pity, Australian adventures are rare. Glad you mentioned the mine. I didn’t get past it. I may have brought a gun with me, don’t remember. I liked the first part of the game though, in the plane, and the pelican.
A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His bill will hold more than his belican,
He can take in his beak
Enough food for a week
But I’m damned if I see how the helican!
EDIT: The limerick is in the game too.

I know I’m weird but I rather enjoyed Down Under Dan. Once I found out there’s no point playing it with a serious mindset (trying to overcome the obstacles in a planned out way) I just checked the hints after I made some progress to make sure I stayed on track.
If I remember correctly that screenshot is where you get eaten by a shark in Sydney after a hint told you to go there. The death message was someting like ‘you shouldn’t always do what you’re told’. By that time I was so used to the absurdity of the game that I actually liked it.
