Adventure Gamers malware security update

Hi all,

As you may be aware, over the past few weeks we’ve been victim of hacking attacks. This has from time to time resulted in malware, spam or redirects being injected into our site.

Obviously, we would never willingly allow anything harmful on Adventure Gamers, and we’ve been working hard to stop these attacks. Usually we’ve been able to at least delete the malware quickly after it appears, but finding the root causes is a lot more difficult.

However, today with the help of a specialised company we were able to identify two backdoors used by the hackers and closed them. We have also scanned and fully cleaned the site of any remaining malware. If you see a Securi badge on the site (currently displayed in the site header) it means the site has been scanned and verified malware-free, and AG is safe to use.

[s]While Google and McAfee (and by extension the Chrome and Firefox browsers) currently still list Adventure Gamers as potentially dangerous, this is based on an assessment from 2 days ago (when there was malware on the site). We have submitted AG for re-review, and this can take up to 24 hours to process.[/s] (Update: AG is now whitelisted on Google/Chrome/Firefox.)

While we can’t be absolutely certain that further attacks won’t happen, we believe we have found the source of the attacks.

Lastly, I should mention that while code was injected into the site, our server or admin were not directly compromised, nor were any user/password details in danger (your password is also encrypted twice).

We apologize for any inconvenience caused, and hopefully (fingers crossed) things should be better now.

(Tl;dr version: AG should now be malware free)

well hopefully that will be the end of it Smile I did fear for the future of the site when it started being listed as a dangerous site in google, since google is the ruler of the world nowadays.

Out of interest, how were they putting code onto the site? Was it a vulnerability in expressionengine?

Thanks for the information, the site is showing up as clean today. Hopefully that will keep those hackers at bay.

Thanks for all your hard work trying to maintain it malware free.

Well done.

An adventure game is nothing more than a good story set with engaging puzzles that fit seamlessly in with the story and the characters, and looks and sounds beautiful.

May I suggest trying out the free version of CloudFlare to enhance the protection of the Adventure Gamers web site?

(No, I’m not affilated with CloudFlare but I am a _very_ happy user of their free service. )

Edit I saw the Sucuri logo now. Both Sucuri and CloudFlare can be used at the same time.

2GooD: I wasn’t aware of CloudFlare. Looks interesting, thanks for mentioning.

We do already have the security features CloudFlare offers though. And since it’s a proxy it may not work with some of the geotargeting we use accross the site. It seems like a pretty amazing service though.
