Here I am saving the princess in Hi-Res Adventure #2: The Wizard and the Princess (1980). This game is also known as Adventure in Serenia.

Some people consider this to be King’s Quest 0, which means it actually took Roberta Williams 7 attempts to finally make a good one and required a lot of help from Jane Jensen in the process. Zing!

I own the PC version of this game which comes in a horrendously ugly gray vinyl folder. It even smells bad…

You’re crazy, Bastich! It only took her 6 attempts to make a good one, tsk tsk.

VI was boring. III and V are my favorites, even if they are notoriously hard. I felt no sense of danger in KQVI. Roberta is at her best when she’s trying to kill, maim, embezzle, impale, suffocate, decapitate, immolate, crush, rape, starve, incinerate and drown you. Anything other than that, and it’s zzzzzzzzz for me.

I have a funny anecdote for that. At my last job I mentioned that I was a big fan of adventure games to a co-worker and the first thing out of his mouth was a stream of expletives about the pie in KQ5.
