Adventure Game Scene of the Day — Thursday 06 June 2013

Today’s scene is from the game Milo (1995), a futuristic game that is probably most similar to something like Jewels of the Oracle in that it is basically just a pure puzzle game.

I’d tell you what it was about, but I yawned during the intro video and missed most of it. Something is up with some AI dude who sets up a bunch of tests for you to take for some reason. It doesn’t really matter as it’s just a flimsy excuse to have you solve a bunch of puzzles and play some mini-games.

If I recall correctly, there are only 14 tests in the game. Despite the low number, the game is still of decent length as some of these tests are quite time-consuming, though their length isn’t necessarily due to difficulty.

As a fan of puzzles, I can’t help but like this game overall, but there was one terrible puzzle in it that just about broke me. It was one of the most tedious affairs I’ve ever had the displeasure to deal with. If it wasn’t for the fact that it was the last test I needed to pass to access the endgame, I probably would’ve quit the game and never gone back to it.

I have very vague memories of playing this as a child. Had forgotten all about its existence until this screenshot. I remember being absolutely wowed by the graphics but being terrible at the actual gameplay.

And here’s another game I hadn’t heard about.
Bastich, your AGSotD’s are enlightening to say the least! Thumbs Up

I remember the endless discussions (Agustin, Aya, SirDave etc..) about what constitutes a Myst-Clone back in the day and Milo was one of them.  I believe you were one of the few who owned this game and it was very hard to find.  What is it worth nowadays?

A game’s value has more to do with demand than rarity alone. This is a game that has little to no demand. I paid $5 for my copy on ebay many years ago. There’s a copy selling for $23 on ebay at this very moment.

The game is also not much of a Myst-clone. All the puzzles are completely self-contained. There is no exploration to speak of, no clues to find, and no story to discover. Just puzzles. Like The 7th Guest without any of the FMV cutscenes.
