My favorite adventure games are the traditional 2d animation ones, as opposed to ones with computer generated graphics.

So I thought I’d start a crowd-sourcing project with you all, so that we can compile a list of all the animated adventure games ever made and hopefully find out about some we didn’t know existed.

If you know any animated adventure games, comment them below, and as I get comments I will edit this original post to create a list of them all by the year they were made.

Just to clarify, what kinds of animated adventures do you not want on the list?

This is a good idea, by the way!

So is the rule that it should be generally 2D, or that there should be absolutely /no/ 3D at all? Take Broken Sword 2 as an example. It’s 95% 2D or so, with only a few poorly integrated 3D animations throughout the game such as one cutscene with a helicopter and a water wheel in the jungle by the priest’s hut.

I would say Broken Sword 1 and 2 are counted as 2D.

You know this is going to be a huge list, right? There are hundreds and hundreds of these games.

The first 2 Broken Swords would for sure be included. I think as long as the actual characters and backgrounds are 2d it should be on the list. In fact, I’ll add the Broken Sword games now as the first entries.

I know it’s going to be a large list, this is why I sought the forum’s help.

List continued

Broken Sword 5: The Serpent’s Curse (Revolution / December 4th, 2013)
Detective Case and Clown Bot: Murder in the Hotel Lisbon (Nerd Monkeys / December 5th, 2013)

non polygons i guess?  hmm.. i spose that leaves the longest journey out since the characters are rendered polygons against 2d backgrounds?... but, what is the purpose of such a differentiation?  I could understand trying to differentiate between 3d multidirection games or first person perspective adventure games… but imo as long as its 2d or 2.5d characters with 2d backgrounds, partial 3d elements dont really change the nature of an adventure game. (unless its from a first person perspective or behind the character etc)

anyway, an old favorite comes to mind : “Robin Hood : Conquests Of The Long Bow”

The “Kyrandia” games were great too, though they had some 3d animation (i think? maybe just in cutscenes?).. but they are overall as 2d as any space quest or kings quest… so yeah, I dont get the point.

pretty much anything from sierra or lucasarts fits i guess.. (90s eras)

Thanks for the contributions, I have added all the games listed so far as well as many I remembered myself. As the list gets longer it will become much more challenging to come up with games, and maybe cause people to uncover obscure ones.

I have found in my research that some obscure games are true hidden gems (Like Duckman for instance, that is obscure because it was only released in the UK) but other games are obscure and forgotten for good reasons, and I think here of something like Willy Beamish, which had a terrible interface and was more like reading a comic book than playing an adventure game.

I guess I could elaborate on the reasons I don’t like “2.5 D” or 3D games, but I don’t want to cause a big debate. There is nothing wrong with those polygonal games. This is merely a list of animated adventure games for people whose personal taste favors animated over CG.

Just added them, although I was not able to find any information on the Scooby Doo graphic adventure.

I wonder if we should exclude animated adventure games aimed at children altogether, or maybe just create some colored text codes, for example, have all the games for kids written in blue font. And maybe create another color code for games that are considered to have some serious flaw with their interface.

The Scooby Doo adventure game is actually only for Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. It feels exactly like a point-and-click LucasArts game, and it is different from the SNES version. It’s kinda rare. Also challenging… not really just a kiddie game.

Here’s a video:

And here’s the Wikipedia entry. Note there are two very different versions, one for SNES and one for Sega:
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scooby-Doo_Mystery

I was trying to think of little known adventure games when I mentioned this one.

I’m not exactly sure what makes a game’s graphics 2D. What about games like Myst?

Amazon is a computer-generated, part FMV game. Heart of China does have the hand-painted backgrounds, but the characters are in FMV. By that logic, we can say The Lost Horizon should be on the list.

I’ll add some obscure ones - Galador: The Prince And The Coward and Orion Burger.

Recently finished: Four Last Things 4/5, Edna & Harvey: The Breakout 5/5, Chains of Satinav 3,95/5, A Vampyre Story 88, Sam Peters 3/5, Broken Sword 1 4,5/5, Broken Sword 2 4,3/5, Broken Sword 3 85, Broken Sword 5 81, Gray Matter 4/5\nCurrently playing: Broken Sword 4, Keepsake (Let\‘s Play), Callahan\‘s Crosstime Saloon (post-Community Playthrough)\nLooking forward to: A Playwright’s Tale
