I’m just not convinced yet that I will like it.

If one little magnifying glass, used by numerous sites, is not intuitive enough for you to remember I am one hundred percent sure you would HATE the interface of the game and would need lots of help to get started.

I notice you didn’t reply to my post about Alarcus/Alexander.  Tongue

Let me check that.

Edit:

Karlok - 18 July 2019 04:13 PM

It says Alexander, not Alarcus. That leaves the question why on earth this guy is called Alarcus in English.

Beats me. Whoever thought “Alarcus” (sounds like a centurion’s name to me, Alarcus Maximus for instance) was a Russian name doesn’t know anything about Russian names. I’ll repeat: I’m surprised Mr. Ordynskiy had no objection to “Alarcus”.

Karlok - 18 July 2019 04:13 PM

Hey, how’s that for someone who doesn’t speak a word of Russian? Smile

You’re doing fine. The next step would be to learn the cyrillic script.

Btw, there’s something poofy feminine about this Nikita Ordynskiy fellow.

Karlok - 18 July 2019 04:13 PM

And don’t you dare say anything negative about Nikita Ordynskiy!

Oops. Grin

On Obra Dinn, just my observation but I don’t think it’s the game to play for someone who tends to be insecure about his or her puzzle-solving skills. Because despite it being logical to a fault, if you are insecure then the blame will go straight towards the game itself.

Another thing, the biggest mystery of the Obra Dinn: how the guy in the rowboat can sit there for the 12 odd hours we’re spending on board the ship. Does he not get seasickness? What does he do when he needs to go to the bathroom? Tongue

I hope he brought a book, at least.

I think you’ve missed a suitcase full of (rare French XVIII century) porn there:

Glad that tongue was (probably) not meant for me.

I can’t believe you said that. It must have been Ordynskiy who changed the name, just like in the French localization Miner was changed to Minel (see Ninth’s post). Here is Mr Alarcus on the English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Polish, and Russian manifest.

Why? I did fine. Smile

It must have been Ordynskiy who changed the name

That’s great, but he should have suggested Mr. Pope to change “Alarcus” to “Aleksandr”* (Alexander) in all the the other versions of the game.

* Originally I wrote this in Cyrillic, but the forum software is not Cyrillic-friendly and I had to change it into Latin.

I can assure you I didn’t, and if you interpreted it that way it was a misreading.

He may have done that, we don’t know. Lucas Pope is the boss. Some of his decisions could have been better, in my not-very-humble-opinion. Like insisting an American should play the part of the bosun. His accent was a bit strange and there are so many good German voiceactors.

LOL! That’s too bad, but I do appreciate your attempt to force me to use Google translate.

Oh? Whatever. Fine. We don’t communicate well. Somehow I’ve lost all interest in the topic.

Watching you two play the banter game makes me want to reconsider my decision not to play the game. Unfortunately, it’s still not available on GOG. They do what they need to do in order to maximize distribution. But I wish developers would not limit themselves to single distribution channels.

Return of the Obra Dinn has been available at GOG from the start. I don’t understand why you can’t find it. All you have to do is type gog.com in your browser, press enter, click on the search button (the magnifying glass on the right), type the name of the game (or just obra dinn), and then you see this:

Sorry I was unable to re-drill down the the search level you mention.

But I remember the AG review. And the first two paragraphs say:

I was one of the smartest kids in my elementary school. This did not continue into middle or high school, and definitely not into college, where I was spectacularly average, but for a couple of years I was on top of the world because I was a “gifted” child, which meant that once a week I was sent to a special class with the other gifted kids where we would work through logic grid puzzles handed out by our teacher.

These puzzles, if you’re not familiar, tasked the solver with identifying a group of people based on a series of written clues. Who was who at the birthday party? “Joe wore red and was seated next to the girl in green.” “Nancy wore purple and doesn’t eat meat.” “Annie would never be caught dead in green.” By filling a grid with X’s and O’s to track people’s possible identities and attributes, you’d eventually arrive at a full picture of the scenario. Who wore what? Who ate what? Who brought which gift?

And I recall saying that I hate these types of puzzles. And TimovieMan said something to the effect that it wasn’t like that at all.  And somebody else said that that was exactly what these puzzles were like. And I decided not to purchase the game, nor join the playthrough.

Then, recently, I reconsidered. But thanks to our long-standing relationship, your comments tell me that I am not worthy of this game.

So I shall not play it.

Strictly speaking, that’s exactly what the puzzles are like, except with the way it’s presented it feels different, and more based on careful observation and reflexion than it is on pure logic.

Obra Dinn is quite an extra-ordinary game. Sure, it’s probably not to everyone’s taste, but still worth a try, perhaps just wait for a discount if you don’t feel like paying full price.

Re-drill down the search level? What does that even mean?

rtrooney, I absolutely refuse to accept that someone who plays adventure games, who solves PUZZLES for Pete’s sake, is incapable of remembering what a magnifying glass stands for, of using the search function at a site like GOG, AG, ScummVM or Steam. I don’t know what’s stopping you from learning basic stuff that would life make much easier for you. You are the only one who knows. But your knee-jerk reaction is always complaining and blaming others: the site, the software, the publisher, and here the developer: “I wish developers didn’t limit themselves to single distribution channels.”

Did you notice the big yellow GOG button next to those paragraphs in the review? You must have seen it at least twice. Next time you read an AG review and want to know if the game is available at GOG, look for it. If it’s there, clicking it will take you straight to the relevant GOG page, in this case Obra Dinn.

And I recall saying that I hate these types of puzzles. And TimovieMan said something to the effect that it wasn’t like that at all.  And somebody else said that that was exactly what these puzzles were like. And I decided not to purchase the game, nor join the playthrough.

I agree with Timovieman. But don’t take anybody’s word for it. Go to youtube, look for the by now familiar magnifying glass, Smile type “Obra Dinn walkthrough”, pick one of the list, and watch the first 30 minutes or so.

Then, recently, I reconsidered. But thanks to our long-standing relationship, your comments tell me that I am not worthy of this game.

Whether you like it or not, I meant what I said. Obra Dinn does things differently. Using the in-game book and navigating through the game has to be learned. The interface may be very confusing for you at first.

So I shall not play it.

Okay.
