Aisle is experimental text adventure by Sam Barlow, the creator of Her Story. It’s a one-command game that allows you to experiment multiple scenarios to uncover what is really the story behind the man.

Just try it. Karlok recommended it to me and from time to time I go back to it to try something different, it’s pretty fascinating.

Yeah, I should get back to it too. I’m sure I haven’t discovered everything yet. Mr Barlow seems to have a thing for telling a story in random snippets.

I’ve gone back and tried more commands. I can’t think of anything new anymore. Wilco, are you willing to discuss the game with me or do you want to wait a while longer? I’m confused! Well, it’s a Sam Barlow game, so maybe I should be.

Sure thing.

I agree that it gets confusing, Sam keeps refusing to give a straight story… Shifty Eyed

There seems to be 2 or 3 possible stories:

1- During a romantic vacation in Rome, the girlfriend Clare died in a scooter accident. Achieved by thinking of Rome or accident or scooter

2- There was a romantic vacation in Rome but Clare is alive and well
Achieved by think of day, call Clare (she just shows up)

3- Clare left you some time in the past
Achieved by think of break up

Other interesting actions:

marry woman - he says he was going to settle down with Clare 4 years ago but was too young (break up scenario?) and tries too marry 2 women Smile

invite woman - he says he has not been impulsive since the breakup with Clare and the Rome business - confusing, both things happened?

look at markers - talks about how Clare changed him

think of death - seems like Clare died to a debilitating disease…

give gnocchi to woman - nothing really special, just different

break sauces or break shelves - “you are not cured” or go to jail

leads to remember jail

undress Smile

Yeah, there are recurring themes, no straight story. After a while I felt like I was a director telling different actors to improvise based on the command I entered. I enjoyed the game for what it is, but I’d still rather piece together one story from many snippets.

2- There was a romantic vacation in Rome but Clare is alive and well

Variations: frown - wave - sigh

3- Clare left you some time in the past
Achieved by think of break up

Or: push her trolley (which suggest you left Clare)

invite woman - he says he has not been impulsive since the breakup with Clare and the Rome business - confusing, both things happened?

Maybe he murdered her (impulsive!) when she broke up with him? (woman, look at me - scream - think of smile

think of death - seems like Clare died to a debilitating disease…

Yes, and you can tell the brunette about it.

give gnocchi to woman - nothing really special, just different

Hadn’t found that one, I like it.

Commands I found interesting:
follow woman—> stalk woman (sad)
ask woman for her name (one of the few good endings)
pull her trolley (the brunette’s name is now Kate)
crack up. Smile

EDIT: There’s also Clare’s suicide, but I don’t remember how I found that one.

Thanks for posting this, Wilco.  I haven’t played a text adventure yet, so this is a neat introduction.  It’s like alternate realities based on our choices.  Very clever!

Unfortunately, this game takes it for granted that players are familiar with the syntax of commands in text adventures. Here’s a minicourse, including the most common abbreviations:

Ask X about Y , e.g. ask wilco about game
Show X to Y, e.g show trolley to wilco
Talk to X about Y
Tell X about Y
Ask X about Y
You can give orders to people. Type their name and a comma., e.g. wilco, follow me or wilco, give me game

look (l) - description of current room
examine (x) - description of object or person
wait (z)
go north (n), go south (s) etcetera

Each game has their own verbs for you to discover. This one has at least 120 unique endings.

Thank you for that info, Karlok.  I’m copying as a reference.  I own two text adventures that I haven’t tried yet, Future Boy and 1893: A World’s Fair Mystery.

Lol, never tried pull, only push. Crack up also a nice werid one
I didn’t think about telling her about stuff. Just tried death, suicide, work, Rome, Clare, murder , all with different outcomes

Never saw that one, just typed think of suicide now… Sad one

I played Aisle after my first playthrough of Her Story, so this easter egg reference to Aisle had gone right be me the first time. Hannah showing the police a photo of her missing husband. Smile
