Adventure game with silent protagonist

Hey guys!

I was wondering if anyone knew if there were any point & click adventure games out there with a silent protagonist? I tried to rack my brain around it but couldn’t think of any.

With silent protagonist i don’t mean games where every character is non-verbal like, for example, the amanita design games but more like Link in Zelda games or Samus in Metroid where NPC’s have dialogue but the protagonist is silent or only reacts through gestures/facial expressions etc.

Full disclosure, i’m thinking about trying something like that in a project i’m currently working on and i would love to see how other devs have tackled that situation if there are any.

I’m thinking the dialogue for the NPC’s might end up very exposition-heavy and unnatural if you’re not careful.

Would be very grateful if you can help me out! Smile

Going through my list of games in alphabetical order… (Obviously not including Myst-style 1st-person games, which don’t seem to be what you’re looking for.)

The Cave is pretty much what you’re talking about. (There’s a narrator, but it’s not really used to convey the PC’s thoughts.)

I can’t remember for sure, but I think the Gobl*ns games might work with silent protagonists as well. Look at Goblins 3 in particular, which has more story and characters than the previous two.

Maybe Lilly Looking Through? Not sure. It doesn’t have lots of NPCs to interact with anyway.

Monument Valley. Especially the second one. It’s done pretty cleverly, with a tiny character that doesn’t even have a recognisable face.

The Quest for Glory games have a silent protagonist (and they make fun of that regularly), but they cheat by having a narrator.

I’m pretty sure Stacking’s protagonist is silent, at least during the gameplay sections (he might speak during the cutscenes at the beginning/end of chapters).

And that’s all I can think of! Hopefully this helps a bit.

What about The Neverhood and Armikrog?

Journey of a Roach? Bad Mojo?

Dropsy?

The only one I can think of is Daedalic’s Harvey’s New Eyes. Heroine Lilli does all the hard work without speaking, but she does shake and nod her head in response to questions. She also makes expressive sounds like Uh? or Erm… And the game has a narrator.

I think Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons is the best example of this. Although there really are no understandable dialogues at all in the game so it might belong in the first category you mentioned.

The Sexy Brutale has a mute protagonist while the NPCs talk but one of the brilliant parts of that game lies more in how it removes all traditional dialogues and instead replace it with the player observing the other characters, this way getting all the information needed.

The sexy brutale has been on my “to buy” list for a while now. Going to have to get it now, it’s for research purposes Wink
