Challenge 3: Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller!

It seems “Cognition” took away a lot of the Reader’s Choice awards from the 2013 Aggies. I love dark storylines and the supernatural, so I’ve had my eye on this game for awhile. I’ll be playing it for the first time along with you guys.

It is available through Steam and GOG. You have 8 days to complete it!

I haven’t anywhere finished TWAU yet (so failed the 8 day challenge!) but when I do will most definitely play Cognition which I bought the whole series of over a year ago!

Woo, I’m glad you guys approve! I was a bit worried that I’d pick a game no one wants to play. Tongue I picked it up in one of the Indiegala bundles I think for $1.

Is there ANYTHING you haven’t played before?! Tongue

I gotta say that I’m not big fan (to put it mildly) of Phoenix Online’s graphics style, but I heard so many interesting things about Cognition, that it was on my radar for some time. And I’ve just seen Seven, so I’m hooked in a serial killer story (not to mention Jane Jensen’s input, after finishing GK2). As with the previous episodic title (they’re definitely not my “specialty”) I can not promise I’ll manage to finish it all, but I’ll try to play through the first episode at least.

Recently finished: Four Last Things 4/5, Edna & Harvey: The Breakout 5/5, Chains of Satinav 3,95/5, A Vampyre Story 88, Sam Peters 3/5, Broken Sword 1 4,5/5, Broken Sword 2 4,3/5, Broken Sword 3 85, Broken Sword 5 81, Gray Matter 4/5\nCurrently playing: Broken Sword 4, Keepsake (Let\‘s Play), Callahan\‘s Crosstime Saloon (post-Community Playthrough)\nLooking forward to: A Playwright’s Tale

This is exactly the kind of game a challenge makes me go for it, I played the first episode but didn’t grab me so it got stuck in backlog hell, but now…

I played the first episode when it was originally released, waited for the game to be on Steam to get the rest, but never actually returned to it. This seems like a good occasion; I’ll try to tag along.

There’s actually quite a few games I haven’t played before (some notables include The Pandora Directive, Day of The Tentacle, Full Throttle, and both of the Syberia games), but for some reason all the games picked so far I’ve played.

I’m actually think I’m going to skip this one guys. I have a bunch of other games on my queue and that I have to review for the blog I write for. Sorry, maybe next time.

with a combination of the witness and new game from infamous quests coming out, i can make no guarantees. But i might try to play it this weekend. I played through part of the first episode when it came out and i had mixed feelings, didnt like it very much. But might be worth a 2nd chance.

I’ll be joining u guys in this playthrough. I have bought the game before and was looking for a motivation to play it, and seems like this is a great excuse.

I’ve completed the prologue for what I’m pretty sure is the 4th time in my life.

I like the graphics (I understand why some don’t, but I’m fine with the way the game looks), the music, and the cognition powers definitely show promise.

Not fond of the interface, especially when dealing with inventory items; it’s completely unintuitive to me. Also, I’m 30 minutes into the game and already tired of all the clichés: the maverick cop who disobeys authority because she just knows better, the older partner who’s mostly useless, creepy cemeteries, etc.—and of course the whole torture porn premise.

It’s interesting that the very first thing you do, shoot the padlock, is (1) a very, very tired cliché and (2) completely nonsensical in the real world. I’m looking forward to finding out if this was the perfect way to set the tone for the game.

I’ve just come to write the exact same thing - PEOPLE, what’s wrong with classic mouse cursor as an inventory item?! Even SCUMM system seems more comfortable than this one!

Also, I don’t like how the game just throws you in the middle of an action - I don’t need a 15-minute intro, but this seemed like too little - who is this killer? Why is my brother there?

On the other hand, I’m already used to the graphics (though it seems a bit choppy), and voices seem pleasant enough. Cognition powers already managed to overcome Sherlock’s “special powers” system in Crimes & Punishments and Gray Matter tricks, so that’s a good thing.

I completely agree. I’ve just finished the first part, the flashback. We didn’t know the characters, didn’t have any reference for them and wasn’t emotionally invested. A scene of normal life for her and her brother, and her and her partner, before being put in that situation would have been nice. It has a very “Saw”-like atmosphere, also reminded me of “Heavy Rain”, though I think so far it’s not very subtle.

I don’t much like the animation (her movements are weird, like sitting on thin air), but I do like the cutscenes. Although why she couldn’t dig for herself I’ll never know. I did like the cutting wires puzzle. You can definitely see a bit of Jane Jensen in the map with the different areas and the engine sound when going to a new location. Even on the fastest setting it still stutters and takes forever to get to the next scene on my computer, when “Wolf Among Us” with better graphics ran smoothly.

I have to say I completely disagree about the intro. I find that I have less and less tolerance for games that take forever to get going. Maybe it’s because I spend less time playing games than I used to and more time following TV shows, but I find that, when I’m playing a game, I want to be playing the game, not sitting through some 15-minute, formless exposition dump.

And a game like Cognition, which adheres to an instantly-recognizable formula, can really just start in media res and expect players to figure out what’s going on, and then just go from there. And I for one am really glad they did it that way. A game like The Longest Journey, which takes literally 3 hours to introduce everything and everyone before the story gets going, is not something I think I’d be able to put up with anymore.
