1995:  The Dig (Noctropolis)
1996:  Tex Murphy: The Pandora Directive

2002 Syberia (a ray of sunshine in the doom and gloom surrounding Adventure games)

one thing i noticed so far, and it is clear, everybody almost all agrees on Syberia(2002), Dreamfall (2006) and Machinarium(2009).

but anyways these lists are great, thanks Ahenobarbus!, for the idea, as it seems as a perfect acquaintance record for each one of us through his/her taste with years of adventuring.
i really would like to encourge all to to participate with their lists.

Well it’s not like there was much choice in 2002 and 2006 Smile

I actually forgot about Machinarium… Hmm, It’s also a great game, probably should be mentioned in my list next to Book Of Unwritten Tales. But I still liked Emerald City Confidential more (my favorite game from Dave Gilbert) Smile

before that even, and if it wasnt for the longest journey, Black Mirror, syberia, i would have thought that the genre was dead, black!. Smile

Emerald City is a wonderful game, you can use it to introduce the genre to someone you know(which i did)  Wink and will turn out to be a great 1st experience.

i dont know why, but i feel like i owe Anna’s Quest an apology, that i kept aside all those months, but i am making it up it anyways by saying that “after playing Anna’s Quest i feel that Sierra is alive or at least resurrected”, there was nothing close to Sierra spirit that much before, and if that is not enough, i put it before Stasis and Armikrog as the best game for this year, i can even say that it’s better than anything Daedalic released before (or developed), but to be fair and not to take any credits off Daedalic, that the game (full) is much more better than the 1st episode alone; i mean the game gets far better after chapter one, and that might be to Daedalic cooperation.

1993: Sam & Max hit the road
1994: /
1995: Flight of the Amazon Queen
1996: Broken Sword 1
1997: The Curse of Monkey Island
1998: / haven’t played any 1998 games, not even Grim Fandango,...yet

2001: /
2002: Syberia 1
2003: Runaway A road Adventure

2005: NiBiRu
2006: Secret Files: Tunguska
2007: Jack Keane

2012: Lost Chronicles of Zerzura

This is a hard list to compile. So many great games in the 90’s and so few in the 00’s.

—edit—
I added 80’s games as well. I’ve never really played Zork and the like, so while they propably are better games out there, I mainly played graphic advenuteres.

1984: King’s Quest (Hey, it might not be the BEST game, but it’s still charming)
1985: King’s Quest 2 (Again, charming more than it’s great)
1986: Space Quest 1 (Honorary mention King’s Quest 3, which I think is the best of the first three.)
1987: Maniac Mansion (Honorary mention Larry1 and Police Quest 1. Neither have endured time that well I think, though LSL1 was made better in the ill famed Replay remake. PQ1 on the other hand still is one of the more interesting titles from the 80’s)
1988: Police Quest 2 (PQ2 is the best PQ game I think. It has pretty silly plot, but I like the crime scene stuff. Honorary mention Zak MacKracken, a game ruined by mazes)
1989: The Colonel’s Bequest (Tough year, a lot of my favourites were released then, but The Colonel’s Bequest is, I think, propably the best game by Roberta Williams and one of the stongest games Sierra did in the 80’s. Honorary mentions: Hero’s Quest(Quest for Glory1), Space Quest III (best of the SQ parser titles) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade )

1990: Circuit’s Edge. (Westwood game based on a novel “When Gravity Fails”. Both recommended if you like cyberpunk. Honorary mention to Monkey Island)
1991: Space Ques IV (My all time favourite SQ game)
1992: Fredrik Pohl’s Gateway (Honorary mention to The Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes: The Case of the Serrated Scalpel)
1993: Quest for Glory: Shadows of Darkness (My personal favourite from QfG series)
1994: Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers (Yeah, one of my favourite adventure titles. Honorary mention to Beneath a Steel Sky)
1995: The Dig (one of my favourite Lucas titles.)
1996: The Pandora Directive (honorary mention Normality and Spycraft)
1997: Blade Runner (honorary mention Zork: Grand Inquisitor)
1998: Black Dahlia (one of the best FMV games made. Horrible final puzzles though)
1999: The Longest Journey (honorary mention Gabriel Knight 3, Discworld Noir)
2000: -
2001: -
2002: Syberia
2003: Salammbo: Battle for Carthage
2004: Sherlock Holmes: Secret of the Silver Earring
2005: Myst V: End of Ages
2006: Dreamfall
2007: Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened
2008: Sam & Max: Season Two
2009: The Book of Unwritten Tales
2010: Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse
2011: L.A. Noire
2012: The Walking Dead
2013: The Raven
2014: Tesla Effect (honorary mention Broken Age, J.U.L.I.A. I want to say Dreamfall Chapters as well, but it’s not complete yet)
2015: Stasis

As I said, a hard list to compile. Even from lookg from Mobygames list, I just couldn’t find anything I liked in the adventure genre for 00-02.

-Edit-
Thanks to Chrissie I remembered Syberia, so -02 has a title now Grin

I don’t care that much for Myst. But End of Ages was pretty good IMO. I was looking the collectors edition with Edna And Harvey it seems. That one was released 2011.

This thread looks fun & I’ve found other members’ choices interesting!
I didn’t start playing games until the mid 90’s but have caught up on some so my list is compiled from games released in a particular year that I may not have played until a lot later. Also my list is not representative of games that I might have liked the best if I’d played more & just of the ones I happened to have played & liked in absence of playing others!

1990 The Secret of Monkey Island
1991 Monkey Island 2
1992 – (Haven’t played any games from that year or don’t want to mention them!)
1993 Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
1994 Jack the Ripper
1995 I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream
1996 Broken Sword 1
1997 Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon
1998 The Blackstone Chronicles
1999 Discworld Noir
2000 The Longest Journey
2001 Dracula 2: The Last Sanctuary
2002 Syberia
2003 The Black Mirror
2004 The Moment of Silence
2005 Shady Brook
2006 The Secrets of Da Vinci – The Forbidden Manuscript
2007 Culpa Innata
2008 Diamonds in the Rough
2009 Yoomurjak’s Ring
2010 15 Days
2011 To the Moon
2012 The Cat Lady
2013 ND: The Silent Spy
2014 Moebius
2015 Contradiction

It’s weird to see so many lists starting in 1990. You guys need to play The Colonel’s Bequest!

Hey, I’d love to if I could Kurufinwe! but the reason that the lists all start from 1990 is down to Ahenobarbus’ original post:

Ahenobarbus - 10 October 2015 06:19 PM

Hi all! I read Readers Top 10 thread and realized how difficult it is to make a top10 list with so many good adventure games released in all these years. So I decided to create an alternative thread and choose one good game (“game of the year”) from each year since 1990.

Well, some of us stood up for what’s right and chose to go against the rule!

(Or had failed to notice the rule.)
