I’m making an adventure game (myst like) and I’m hoping that this is a good place to let people know about it :)

Hi all

Firstly Firstly. I first posted this in https://www.reddit.com/r/adventuregames/comments/k5bchr/im_making_an_adventure_game_myst_like_and_wonder/

and someone there suggested I posted it here. I think this is a good suggestion and strangely I really should of known to do so as I’m already aware of Adventure Gamers. I also don’t want to be one of those people that just post everywhere without responding so at this time I’ve posted there and now here Grin Now on to the original message.

Firstly I’d like to say I’ve always loved adventure games from the lucasfilms games to broken sword, Myst to more recent games like Oxenfree and basically anything Amanita Design does, those guys are geniuses. I’ve wanted to make games since I was a kid playing Loom in front of the TV and I’ve finally managed to get some way towards that.

I’ve been making this game for a while and finally want people to play the first versions of it and also want to actually find a community that appreciates these types of games as I want to continue to make mine and I don’t want to just be doing that for myself but also get encouragement from others so I don’t just give up.

So a little about the game. It’s of a similar style to the Myst game in that it is from the first person perspective, each environment is an image (although in this case 360 degree and a video) and you can click to go to each location. A bit like return to Zork as well in that sense… and the grand inquisitor.

I’ve been working on this project for a while in both the artwork and creating the engine (made in Unity and can be downloaded from my site) for it as well, which allows anyone to make their own game if they want.

My website says a lot of this so here’s a link:

It’s going to release on Steam but if you want to try it now you can get beta codes from here:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1s0WXE6_OQ1BB2sVIe3AVQjjI8deNF6dMkHyHJXFZQck

Please note this is work in progress. I’ve done a lot of art for the game already (at least half of the locations aren’t in the game yet but have been drawn) and I’m building on it as I go. The current beta allows you to explore the ground, first floor and attic of the house and has a couple of simple puzzle to solve. I’m going to continue to add things to this explorable environment to build on the plot. So some things aren’t in there yet such as you can’t look at the picture in the bedroom and the letter on the desk in the study. I’m going to be updating these as I go making the current environment more interesting and build on the story, which in all essence is the point of the endeavour Smile

All the artwork is hand drawn and the sound effects are taken from vintage records. I really want to make this an adventure that people feel they could make as well if they wanted. Not to say I want to make it look poor, more that I want the techniques used to make it are easy to understand and have a bases in reality. So avoiding 3D animation or models etc. Kind of like, in the same way you can look at a comic and think “I could make my own comic” and unlike when you watch an avengers film and think “well that’s something I’ll never will be able to do”.

You can find a trailer and a few images for the game on the Steam page:

So please let me know if I’m posting in the right place and if you’d be interested in something like this.

With the whole Covid lockdown shenanigans I’ve found myself bouncing from optimism to wanting to pack it all in. I’ve not really told anyone outside of my social and work groups about the game and quite frankly they really aren’t the audience. I want to find an audience so I know I’d be making it not just for myself.

If you give it a go and let me know what you think.

Hope everyone here is doing well and getting time to disappear to another world every now and again.

All the best

Phil
