Update on Top100 Adventures of all time

I wonder, will we be getting an update on the Top100 adventuregames before end of the year or will this be done around the same time as the annual Aggies?

Would be interested to see how the update will be:-) and what process be followed:

Will the best games of 2012 be simply added at their respective places? Will their have been enough time to factor in aspects such as legacy or novelty when the choice is made so close to their actual release date?

What games will be losing their place in the Top 100?
Is it a matter of removing games from the bottom to accomodate the new placements? Or will another approach be taken?

I dont think the top 100 will be updated anytime soon. It’s done only in 5-6 years or more

“The plan is to revisit the list every year-end to keep it updated. Not with a big countdown like this, but each year a new list replacing the current one.”

Hm. I’m not sure about the idea of updating every year. It was a great list and I would hate to see games kicked out. And there are very few games I would kick out of the current 100 and replace with 2012 games.

I saw the Top 100 more as a one-off feature rather than an ongoing thing.

Diego is right. Which isn’t surprising, as he was quoting me. Tongue

We do plan to revisit the list every year, but I haven’t even begun to think about the logistics.  We’ll probably start discussing it before the Aggies.  Then we’ll already be in full argument mode come awards time!

It’s not just new games that will be considered, but older game recommendations from new staff (or existing staff who played older games this year) whose experiences weren’t reflected last time. If, say, someone new has joined us and thinks we badly overlooked certain games, they’ll have a chance to make that case.

New additions will be slotted in where we think is fair, and old games at the bottom of the list are in the most jeopardy of sliding off.  But others may drop or rise as well, for various reasons.

Having said all that, I don’t expect the list to change MUCH.  It’s unlikely that more than a small handful of games in any given year is likely to even be in the conversation of Top 100 all-time.  But I do think it’s only fair that we consider them each year.  Plus we can update our “you might also like” lists.

I’ll be sure to keep track of any games that slide off, though, so they’ll be remembered for posterity.  Smile

I’m surprised that ‘To the Moon’ didn’t make it in the top 100 list because that game was a masterpiece and actually made me cry which is rare.

....and 2012 brought some games worthy of placement in the TOP100, like The Walking Dead most likely, maybe even others.

Yeah! Users should be allowed to vote on what they think belong in the list.

To the Moon had only been out a month when the list released, and we were working on it a long time before that. It had no chance. That said, as good as it is, it’ll be hard pressed to make the next one either.

User votes won’t be happening. This is our list.

I do still mean to do an update eventually. But clearly it won’t be as often as I’d have liked. Just too many other things to do.

Actually, that’s common sense.

If this was a user-generated list, then all the big and popular titles would win, and all the great obscure titles would lag behind. You can forget about The Last Express, Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon, even the Gabriel Knight and Broken Sword games and probably Grim Fandango too. It’d be Myst, Heavy Rain, L.A. Noire, The Walking Dead and Professor Layton.

For a list like this to have any credibility, you need to keep it within a select group of specialists. The general public would just drown out all the smaller titles…

That would be more true on a mainstream site, but far less so here where there are lots of hardcore adventure fans. I’m sure all the games you mentioned (except maybe CCS) would make a top user list. Professor Layton, on the other hand, might not, since not nearly as many adventure gamers own a DS. But yes, certainly the more obscure games would be at a significant disadvantage.

Anyway, that’s not really the problem. It’d be easy enough to tally up a list of 100 most popular games. But it’s a practical impossibility to properly weight such a list. Hypothetical example: just because the most poll respondents overall named Myst in their top 100 doesn’t mean it deserves to be #1. Number of votes and placement are two completely and utterly different things.

Regardless, that’s not why I said what I did. I repeat: This is our list, and it was more then enough work just to do that. We’re not stopping anyone from posting their own.
