Seven Days of Lovecraft, Day 3. Today, Daughter of Serpents, the only (?) adventure game in which you get to completely create your character—and spend longer doing that than actually playing the game. After you’ve picked your gender, age and personality, you get to choose a profession (out of six offered) and allocate points in six skill trees such as the one above. This is actually very fun. But then the game itself is over in an hour, and your skills only make very little difference (the only significant variation is that the game has three main paths, depending only on your profession).

Still, I guess it’s a nice little, very Lovecraftian, short story, and it makes you think how adventure games could be like if they let you pick your character’s skills—and made use of them in the game.

Daughter of Serpents had a weird remake of sorts, called The Scroll. It follows the same general story, and recycles lots of assets (music, characters, locations), but adds voices, some new locations and puzzles (while removing others; let’s say it’s an alternate take on the same story), and removes the character generator, letting only you pick a profession out of two (one of which gets a particularly short experience). The original is definitely more interesting.

Bonus question: can you remember which Lovecraft stories the various items in the screenshot are from?
