Looking for Games to Play (Sensitive Gamer)

Hi,

I posted asking for recommendations a long time ago but I think I need an updated list. I’m seriously seriously craving a good game to play but it’s so hard for me to find games I can play :(

I’m in love with mystery, adventure and sometimes horror games. I love games that let you explore beautiful places and collect items, read lore, and get immersed.

But I’m picky with my games because…

1. 1st person perspective give me HORRIBLE HORRIBLE motion sickness :( 90% of adventure mystery games today are first person.

2. I don’t like narrative stories at all. Games like Life is Strange, Firewatch, the Walking Dead series. I hate being passive. I like to mix up items, rummage freely…etc.

3. I don’t like existential themes. Themes too deep and complicated like philosophical genres…etc.

Games that I played and really enjoyed: The Nancy Drew series. Eyes of Ara, The Painscreek Kilings (really loved this one, even though it was 1st person. I managed eventually to finish it). Thimbleweed Park. True Fear: Foresaken Souls (I don’t like hidden objects, but I liked these two games).

Other games that I really liked The Last of Us, Fallout, Zelda Breath of the Wild.

I’m currently playing Kona which is nice but it’s giving me motion sickness so I don’t look forward to playing. Before that I tried The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and I didn’t like it. It was boring.

I tried Obra Dinn a few weeks ago and I really liked the concept but again it gave me horrible motion sickness.

I know it must be challenging to suggest something with these restrictions but any ideas? :(

To see what games you might have already played, I checked your previous posts
at
https://adventuregamers.com/forums/viewthread/10715/
and
https://adventuregamers.com/forums/viewthread/13901/

If you liked Nancy Drew games, you could try the more recent Carol Reed games.
https://www.mdna-games.com/
They are made using photographs and don’t have the 3D movement that causes
motion sickness.

Silent Footsteps (from 2017) was made by a fan of the Carol Reed games, and is
also made using photographs, so is also not likely to cause motion sickness

https://adventuregamers.com/articles/view/34221

Catyph: The Kunci Experiment (from 2016) and ASA: A Space Adventure (from 2011)
are sci-fi games—1st person, don’t use 3D movement, and aren’t likely to
cause motion sickness

https://adventuregamers.com/articles/view/23855

You said in the other threads that you’ve played Shivers, Zork, 7th Guest, and
Myst, and enjoyed them. Have you played Riven and Lighthouse?
https://www.gog.com/game/riven_the_sequel_to_myst
https://www.gog.com/game/lighthouse_the_dark_being

Then there are
Dark Fall: The Journal (2002)
Dark Fall 2: Lights Out (2004)
Barrow Hill: Curse of the Ancient Circle (2006)
Barrow Hill: The Dark Path (2016)
which are all 1st person horror, and don’t use 3D movement.

Have you played Uru: Complete Chronicles?
https://www.gog.com/game/uru_complete_chronicles
It allows you to switch between 1st and 3rd person.
There is (or was) an online version that included a couple of “Ages” that the
offline version didn’t.

———————-

Are there any 3rd person games that were suggested in your previous threads
that you played and enjoyed? like Book of Unwritten Tales, Night of the Rabbit, Lost Horizon, etc.

If you haven’t played Memoria (aka Dark Eye: Memoria) yet, that’s one to
consider
https://www.gog.com/game/memoria
better than its predecessor Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav
https://www.gog.com/game/the_dark_eye_chains_of_satinav

Then there is Keepsake
https://store.steampowered.com/app/704860/Keepsake/

and Lost Chronicles of Zerzura
https://store.steampowered.com/app/308330/Lost_Chronicles_of_Zerzura/

Most 3rd person adventure games seem to be focussed on story and characters
rather than exploring, but some are mysteries or detective games

Memento Mori

https://store.steampowered.com/app/200490/Memento_Mori/
Memento Mori 2: Guardians of Immortality
https://adventuregamers.com/articles/view/26505
https://store.steampowered.com/app/237970/
Secret Files: Tunguska
https://adventuregamers.com/articles/view/17986
https://store.steampowered.com/app/40330/Secret_Files_Tunguska/
Secret Files 2: Puritas Cordis
https://adventuregamers.com/articles/view/18296
https://store.steampowered.com/app/40340/Secret_Files_2_Puritas_Cordis/
Secret Files 3
https://adventuregamers.com/articles/view/22734
https://store.steampowered.com/app/216210/Secret_Files_3/
Secret Files: Sam Peters (shorter than others in the series)
https://adventuregamers.com/articles/view/25643
https://store.steampowered.com/app/257220/Secret_Files_Sam_Peters/

If you liked the original Fallout from 1997, Fallout 2 from 1998 is similar.
https://www.gog.com/game/fallout_2
Fallout 1 and 2 are turn-based RPG’s rather than adventure games. If you’re OK
with RPG’s, there are a lot more of those that won’t cause motion sickness than
there are 1st person adventure games. RPG’s often have a 3rd person
point-of-view or have an isometric or overhead view like Fallout.

I think you would like Goetia and Sinking Island. Also Detective Di: The Silk Rose Murders. Lost Chronicles of Zerzura is more on the adventure side of things but has elements of mystery.

The Sherlock Holmes games from the 90s would probably suit as well.

Crabapple, thank you very much for taking the time to research and reply! Smile

Yes, I tried some. For example, Night of the Rabbit had wonderful graphics but I wasn’t moved by the story ad the puzzles eventually went flat and repetitive for me. I also tried Quern. I can see the charm in it; has a myst-like vibe. But it’s in 1st person so…

It’s strange though. Sometimes I am able to tolerate 1st person, such as The Painscreen Killings. Not sure what triggers it.

I do love RPGs, yes. I play many of them on consoles.

Sometimes when the game is very old, I’m ashamed to say the interface can hold me back a bit. I didn’t play Fallout 1 and 2. I played the recent ones (3 and 4). The latter in particular was an absolute joy to play. I can spend hours exploring new destinations, reading people’s notes, collecting items. I also think it’s the Blitz era theme that draws me in.

Not sure if you’re looking for RPGs but if you love Fallout then I take it you’ve already tried the Elder Scrolls series? Especially Oblivion and Skyrim?

What about BioWare games such as Mass Effect, Star Wars KoTOR and Dragon Age? All full of lore and stuff to get lost in.

Then there’s the Deus Ex series which you might enjoy. Again, tons of lore and reading etc. And clearly heavily influenced by Blade Runner Smile

And if you like horror then you can’t go wrong with Alien Isolation. Arguably one of the best if not the best horror game. It ticks all the boxes of what you’re looking for. Tons of computers and audio recordings to find to read and listen to messages to find out what’s going on while you explore a massive, almost empty/abandoned but terrifying space station. Only thing is though that it’s 100% 1st person so you might not like it. But it is an amazing game.

I liked Skyrim for a little while then I lost interest. It didn’t stick with me for some reason. I don’t seem to like those types of worlds (wizards, elves, all types of creatures…etc). Same reason I couldn’t stick with FF14. I like fantasy but not too much.

Alien Isolation was fantastic. Played it and loved it Smile

In Quern, did you try turning off Head-Bob & motion blur, while increasing field-of-vision? It’s recommended in Quern’s FAQ for those with motion sickness.

I have a feeling you might’ve tried this already, but you never know!

No! Really? I will try. I had a feeling I would enjoy that game a lot so this is promising. Thank you so much for sharing this info.
