I just watched The Hunt a Danish film about a guy who was accused somehow by a young girl who accused him (wrongly) of exposing himself + (after her father’s drunken friends had exposed her to ‘adult pics’). It’s not a spoiler to say that the film includes a misguided witch-hunt.

As with many Scandinavian films it’s interesting but thoughtful & slow burning.

Don’t forget to mention Mads Mikkelsen’s excellent performance!

Yes, no disagreement there!
Well, one of the reasons I veered towards the film was actually the Carlsberg Ad wondering who the very enigmatic guy was!
I understand now that he’s ‘Hannibal’ (as in Lecter)  - I’m intending to try that first series but I think I’ve got to pay!  Cry

I’d recommend tracking down more of his films (like A Royal Affair, After the Wedding, the Pusher films, heck, even his turn as Bond-villain in Casino Royale). He’s one of the very best actors around.

I can follow the “enigmatic” description. Fits him, imo.

Thanks for the recommendations!  Thumbs Up
Unfortunately none of those titles are included at the moment on Amazon Prime but A Royal Affair is available to rent quite cheaply as is Pusher.  Smile

The Hunt sounds like my kind of movie. I will go look for it.

Nice to know, but using your phone/computer in the cinema can disturb others. Next time maybe wait until it’s over. Besides, maybe the second half was awful?

I watched it on DVD. Second half was still very good. Learned a few things because it is a biopic.

Went to see Joker.

What a masterpiece! Based on the trailer, I said “excellent casting” when I saw Joaquin Phoenix. Now that I’ve seen the film, it’s “perfect casting”. I’m already hoping he finally gets his Oscar.
The movie itself is menacing beyond belief. The atmosphere is very intense throughout, with occasional moments of bombastic soundtrack to add to the threatening vibe of the film.
It’s not actually in the superhero/supervillain genre, and is a lot closer to Scorsese’s classics Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy (which probably explains why Robert DeNiro was in the cast). But for some reason, having this as a Joker film in a bleak early ‘80s Gotham is even more effective than the bleak ‘70s New York setting of Scorsese’s films. Perhaps it’s the comic book and film knowledge of what Joker will become after the film that’s adding to it, but this take on the origin story hits all the right notes.
They nailed it!

Joker - 4.5-5 / 5
(I haven’t quite figured out yet if I’m going the full 5 or not)

Thanks Tim for the info, I am intrigued but there seemed to be some controversy over here in the UK - I haven’t really looked to see what that was all about?  Smile

I saw the Joker too, I loved the ending. Hopefully we’ll see more supervillian/superhero movies like this one.

Fear mongering by the media. The same happened in the US. “The movie will incite riots and mass shootings.” Yet nothing has happened anywhere…

Not exactly a superhero/supervillain movie, though, is it? Reminds me a bit of Unbreakable in that sense: that was also a superhero origin movie without feeling anything like a superhero movie.
Joker’s a lot darker, though. A WHOLE lot!!!  Gasp

I myself haven’t seen Joker because, no matter how well it may be, I already know exactly how the story will play out, minus the specific details. The social politics surrounding it means there won’t be many surprises, and for me a movie needs to be transformative through the experience of watching it… not just through the content of the message it delivers.

Surprisingly, The Joker is back on top at the box office. That is simply amazing. I’ll have to watch this movie a second time.
