If Sony is serious about this, it could be something pretty awesome. Oculus has some great minds there, but they started with pretty much off the shelf parts and it’s only very recently they’ve started working with partners to create special hardware. Sony on the other hand has access to some pretty substantial R&D resources, and there’s no logistical reason why they shouldn’t be able to outdo oculus.

Of course Sony has put out some pretty dodgy (not to mention overpriced) pseudo VR items over the years, so who knows if they’ll do it right, but they should be able to if they approach it right, and it seems like they are from this showing.

The main thing I think Oculus is being smart about is not trying to force a release date on it, and waiting until the product achieves the desired effect before they’re willing to put it out. Sony would do well to take notes. There’s no rush; the PS4 is still brand-spanking new and needs to get the installed base up anyway.

So far, everything I’ve read is just a bunch of pretentious BS. Which developers used it? So far, all the ones that matter started working at Oculus….so far this is the Rift with only 30% of what it should offer.

But hey, its by sony, so it must be great….oh, that Move was real popular wasn’t it. Seriously, I would rather take the product made by enthusiast for enthusiasts than a product made to make money because they heard it could make money.

I don’t see how this is more impressive than the Crystal Cove.

Plus, there’s nothing more annoying than hearing kids say Sony is starting the VR revolution. Seriously? With a mediocre product that does only 1/4 of what the main enthusiasts are trying to do?

So far its more of a 3d display on your face than it is a VR device.

I’m not seeing where the 1/4 or 30% of the Oculus figures are coming from.

Specs look pretty similar and its 1080p.

It’s not like it even for the same market. Oculus Rift will end up as on the PC while Sony will market theirs at the console.

To be honest it’s the Rift’s own fault for highlighting interest in this field again and then not capitalising on it. They are still buggering around with dev kits and demos. They needed to get it to market before the big boys do to gain any traction.

Now it looks like that’s not going to happen.

An adventure game is nothing more than a good story set with engaging puzzles that fit seamlessly in with the story and the characters, and looks and sounds beautiful.

Hey dont need to be over salty, tommorow industry vets will get their hands on it and
we will know how they think, Markrein congratulated Sony on twitter, Ueda games plus Kojima plus Sony Japan studio, Mediamolecule…if Sony is serious things could work, Move was too late to enter the market.
Both OR and Morpheus are hardsell, you never know how people will adapt it, in anycase its a niche and more forces there are to push this VR the better.

I believe Product is the king, no matter what the device is , i dont want gimmicks,
want killer apps. Or killer worlds already existing to be VR compatible like
Journey or Sotc.

I don’t see how this is more impressive than the Crystal Cove.

It’s not, but it seems to have rough feature parity with Crystal Cove at least. With the possible exception of low persistence (which I haven’t heard anything on either way yet).

I guess we’ll find out today when people actually try it and give their impressions.

So far its more of a 3d display on your face than it is a VR device.

This is simply not true. Sony is targeting a true VR experience that will deliver the sensation of presence, just as Oculus is. They’re cribbing notes very closely from Oculus and Valve and it seems like their goals are similar. Full, low-latency, 6-degree head tracking, wide FOV, and a 1080p display.

I feel like you might be confusing this newly announced thing for Sony’s old HMDs without actually reading any articles about this new one. Am I right?

I don’t like the head strap. What’s the weight like? VR headsets have a long way to go before they’re integrated with the other everyday items of the household.

The sheers size of the community Oculus offers is what Sony lacks. You do realize the Sony VR is aimed at the PS4 only right? The best part about Oculus is its SDK, the Integration, the PC Platform, the massive community with support of a variety of creative ideas, etc. Sony will never have that. PS has always been about the few and the quality, but that doesn’t mean they will reach the creativity the VR is suppose to bring. Sony will play it safe.

Whats funny, now that Sony has shown their face, everyone neglects Oculus as if Sony is the second coming. Its sad and says a lot about people’s ignorance. Not to mention, everyone at their keynote was just VR Theory, then a bit of their Specs. VR Theory doesn’t apply to their hardware but all of VR. But I guess by including the explanation of what VR can, you would get them more credit and popularity but people don’t know better.

Based on how well the Move did, I will say I would rather spend my money on something that will be extended not by the first party developers but by a community of enthusiasts, indies, and fans.

Yes I have a DevKit 1, and yes I will be getting the DevKit 2….guess what? At least i can get one. Let me know when you get a Sony Devkit. Funny as, on the PC side of things, Epic announced a $19 subscription model for their new Unreal Engine 4…while its already hard enough to work with Sony on a game project without spending a crap load of money. I’ll stick with SteamVR with VR content made by fans and for fans.

Still too soon, kind of hard to get excited to any of them until release dates and (specially) prices start showing up.

I tend to agree with this. Enough time passed that everybody and their dog could jump on the same bandwagon…

1. Move enetered too late in market, and rival was Japanese console maker, here
its PS4 vs PC, different market, with PS4 6 million already.
Sony Vr not coming this year, same case with Oculus confirmed at GDC Tongue

2. Like Evevalkyrie games will make it on PS4, PS4 is totally open for indies i dont see why it wont make it. Interesting news is that NoMansSky cancelled their VR GDC stuff last moment, probably Sony grabbed them Wink

Certainly I think a lot of experimentation and pioneering are going to work themselves out on PC, and it’s going to be an exciting and frustrating time while we forge the language of VR, a lot like it was in the early days of 3D.

On the other hand, Sony, if they don’t rush things, has the potential to offer something more polished and curated, which is going to appeal to people as well. They’re also going to give VR more credibility and a wider audience. If they do a good job, it’s going to benefit the overall ecosystem, and given that PS4 is likely to be around for a long time, it could end up being valuable for bringing those same PC games to an audience outside of PC enthusiasts.

You have to remember, the desktop gaming rig is becoming a pretty small niche. People are drifting to laptops and tablets, and it’s good that there’s going to be ways for them to have this sort of experience too.

lol reading any of that gives me the understand that you haven’t been following VR all that much. Put all of the good press of something in one place and say someone’s rant is unfounded. lol I like how people throw “its just beginning” around, but we’ve had enough content made for VR to justify its purpose.

Community does not equal ‘bunch of people who love playing games’ in my discussion. WHy would I talk about community in that way if neither of these products are commercially available. Oculus is readily available through the devkit and already has a vast ‘COMMUNITY’ of developers, fans, hobbyists constantly innovating the platform. Tell me, how is Sony planning to do that? They aren’t, thats not their goal, and thats why I won’t give a rats as about Sony’s VR, because its not something I should care about from a developer stance, unless i’m planning to spend a lot of money to develop on the platform.

Everything I’ve heard about it is saying its the same as Crystal Cove…but they always neglect to specify that the Rift has a strong developer community unlike the Morpheus. That’s a big deal. Sure it may not look like money to the average gamer, but its makes paying for such a device a lot more viable.

I highly doubt they aren’t paying people to make it look good.

So whats with the hostility toward the Oculus Rift? A device thats been developed for longer than Sony’s Proprietary VR platform?

Not to mention regarding your number 2….why would that impress anyone? Oculus is making a device for a platform open to many possibilities. Why would I like to hear a company grab a developer just to make them look good instead of talking about a device made by people not pulled from by choice wanting to further the VR cause. How are people so confused and brainwashed in thinking a single corporation is better than a community dedicated to the craft?

Thats the thing, Sony is doing what consoles did to gaming. PC will always be better than Consoles but you don’t see that logical understanding changing the status quo. If I was so stuck up, I wouldn’t own a PS3, PS4 or 360, but guess what? They have their place. My point is people are ripping on Oculus as if they did something wrong. No, Oculus provides a better experience because of its platform. A console friendly VR system will always provide a limited experience. You won’t see porn, or creative content that wouldn’t be caught dead making money. So much can’t be done through Sony’s Perfect World.

The Oculus can run on anything platform (OSX, Linux, PC, Android). I can run 1080p VR Rendering on my 4 year old computer at 60fps. Graphics will be key to giving a real VR experience.

No hostility, Sony themselves called Oculus/Valve out of respect.
Dont know why you are panicking on each SONy VR praise, and making conjecture
of profit this , ripoff that.

Dont even understand what do you mean by community and i dont care if developers have it or not what matters is the product, experiences like NomansSky on Sony VR.
And yes chances are one Killerapp will seal the deal. Any of your PC Indie
Dev can be grabbed if interesting enough, lots of good indies already
on PS4 anyway.

How Sony are doing that no body knows we still have long road to go, E3 and other
expos they will reveal bit by bit, i dont know what were you expecting on first
reveal, look at your Oculus pace, still not making 2014, so whats the hurry.
Infact Sony should take time and make it more better.

Heck i havent even have Ps4 yet, but buying for infamous soon, and need AAA games this year and next before getting my mood ready for VR, so no hurry.

With move ^^^

Niel of Lastofus

Polygon Summary:

- He wears glasses, so he loves that the SONY VR, allows adjustments so that he doesn’t   have to wear contact lenses to use it.
- It felt weird at first to put it on but he quickly forgets it and felt Very Comfortable.
- He feels its very comparable to ORv2
- He thought the move controller can be tweaked and improved

Overall: It works and matches the quality of ORv2. He said Sony got all the major concerns correct and would only need to do tweaks here and there.
