What themes would you like to see more of in adventure games?

I do however second the wish for more purely historical or well-researched real-life based games. For me, this would involve playing a character from the past or even the present, without fantasy elements. More games like 1893: A World’s Fair Mystery, Riddle of the Sphinx, Pillars of the Earth, Odyssey: The Story of Science from writers who know their stuff and are able to educate as well as entertain.

For some reason, a couple of these ideas just culminated into a very specific wish: a game about Marie Curie.

 

Yes that would be great. But more than just “about” her - I’d like to be immersed in biographical and scientific detail, joining her in her discoveries as if I’m making them along with her. If there’s knowledge required, then provide that too. I think game developers underestimate their audience and if it’s a specialised puzzle then it’s a no-no, but I would disagree.

Ya know what I was thinking about on my bike ride today (this and the shower is where all the good thinking gets done) that would be a sensible choice for more adventure games? Games about kids.
Think about it. Adults usually have easy access to most everything they need to get a normal job done. Money, transportation, relatively privileged access to most places,, power tools, booze, combustible materials, etc.
So most naturalistic games about grown ups require convoluted extenuating circumstances, ones that often involve immersion breaking suspension of disbelief, in order to create obstacles for the protagonist to overcome.
But suppose you’re a kid who needs to get something done—whether it’s a naturalistic quest (ie. Get a ladder to reach a high place; acquire a frisbee; get to a far away location…or just across a busy intersection) or a fantastical one, there are believable obstacles that must be overcome. Although the obstacles might be naturalistic and perhaps, one could say, mundane, the solutions could be very creative—precisely because a kid might not have access to the tools or privileges needed to accomplish the task in its usual way.

I’ve never played Willy Beamish, but maybe this game does some of these things? I dunno, I heard it was pretty moon-logicky.

In fact,I’m kind of surprised that Sierra never made the most obvious of series: Kids Quest.
I would *love* to see a Kids Quest game, but have it *not* be a kiddie game. Make it as challenging as the classics! But man, wouldn’t it be more immersive to solve all the problems in KQ V if you weren’t playing as a king who, bereft as he may be, is still a full grown capable adult, presumably with some credibility and reputation?

Not a huge fan of the game (I know it’s regarded as one of the classics), but I always thought the most unpopular part of the game was one of the best things in AG history. I’m talking about the ending to “Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge”.

Don’t know how people feel about spoilers in this regard, it might be one of the most discussed adventure games of all time, but I still feel people should be able to discover the title and it’s ending on their own, if they like.

Some people dislike spoiler tags, but I guess you can’t please everyone:

It really made sense to me that Guybrush was a kid, being amused (and teased) by an older brother. That perfectly fits the game logic, morality and approach to subject matter. In a broader sense: comedy/fantasy adventure games in general. To some, it soured the fancy of being Guybrush, or it was too meta, but it just seemed right to me.

Yeah, I was fine with the ending of that game, too. I wish it had been done less obliquely, in fact; instead of ‘is it or isn’t it?’, I would have preferred to have been told in no uncertain terms IT IS THIS.

That’s about as close as I came when it comes to games about music and the actual working of the music industry. The main character is a band manager who’s trying to put them back together, and everyone has their own music style and attitude to boot Grin I hope you’ll like it.
You might also want to check out Genesis Noir. I tried the demo, and the whole experience was a bit too abstract for my taste, but music is a huge part of this game. MC is a musician, and this time it’s all about jazz.

Come to think about it - I’d love an adventure where the main characters are some old-school rock band members (glam rock or shock rock would be awesome) on a tour that goes “terribly wrong”. Having some Steven Tyler-esque or Marilyn Manson-esque dude deal with stuff would be hilarious Grin

I would love a game based on the book “The Eight” or based on chess like the book “The Flanders Panel”.

Tim Schaffer, if you’re reading this, I would kick start a pure point and click game like the one described above faster than you can say Spinal Tap.

Brutal Legend wasn’t bad at all, but point’n'click would be interesting, for sure.  Grin Where you can play as all the band members too… each dealing with their own personal issue on top of not quite successful tour, and maybe some paranormal entity messing with the universe trying to make every rock song sound like it’s being sung by Britney on helium balloon… I can keep going

Of Bird and Cage is set to come out soon too. As per description” a unique metal album presented as a two-hour-long story-driven game”... Don’t know what to make of it, but I’m keeping my eye on it…

There are actually plenty of games about musicians, but they either aren’t very good and/or don’t even get completed!

For instance, Bolt Riley - A Reggae Adventure never got anywhere, the released thing was more like a demo, and I recently played Ancient Aliens - The Roots of Sound, which has an interesting premise, but only the first chapter was made, and just like Bolt Riley, the game doesn’t really go anywhere in that.

I think the ending was great.
One of the best parts of the sequel that didn’t reach the same level as its predecessor or successor.

Overall, I think controversial and open endings should be used more in adventure games.

Diversity on characters definitely. We have so many straight white dudes. And when it’s a woman it’s usually a spunky straight white detective/reporter stereotype. I love many games that have these kind of protagonists but I really would like to see something else.

And people praised The Cat Lady here. I love it too and would love to play more games depicting mental illness more realistically.

I agree with the sentiment, but something in me resists more games about kids. Because let’s face it, there are plenty already, even if they’re not often for adults, and maybe it’s also because I don’t like the perception of games being ‘just for kids’.

So what about games about someone with a disability? In a wheelchair? Someone who’s deaf or mute? There’s been a game about a blind girl but it was more of a platformer/puzzle game. It would take a lot of creativity but I think it could be done.

I agree with that sentiment, but a game like “The secret of Monkey Island” did it reasonably well. I personally did not get into “Anna’s Quest”, but might still finish it some day, I think it’s praised by some forum members for good reason. “Night of the Rabbit” was also pretty decent. I think I’d like to see more comedy in these types of games, more of a sense of wonder, seeing the world in a certain way. I rather dislike the cynical variety that seemed popular for a while, fairly recently. Dealing with issues is welcome, but please: no cheap shots, less cynicism, or melodrama.

Yes! We need more diversity in every way. For many reasons. If developers are going to tell stories about characters, tell stories that aren’t always on the forefront. Besides representation, it’s also about conveying an experience.

Not just in the most obvious sense: you have a visual disability, so we’re going to limit the vision of the player. What are your interactions like with people who do/don’t understand your experience? How do people respond to you when you walk with a mobility tool or a service dog? When you’re most comfortable speaking sign language, but you put in a lot of effort to speak audibly, do people appreciate your effort? How often do they wrongfully make assumptions about your mental ability?

We touched on this briefly in the modernizing/popularizing thread: adventure games have great potential to be accessible for people who’d experience problems with the input other genres demand from a player. I hope this works for developers as well.
