After the Wedding  (nominated for a best foreign film academy award a few years back): Incredibly touching drama with brilliant performances by the lead actors. Deeply emotional. No cheesy elements at all.

I wish I could agree. The acting is indeed brilliant, but I found everything else terribly cliched and predictable.

What was cliched? Pregnancy/Past affair??
There was some foreshadowing but only later.

Not any event in particular. It’s the whole story, all the characters are stereotypes without much personality. The wealthy family man. The naive do-gooder/loser. The daughter who finds out emotional stuff from the past. Especially the daughter, we know nothing about her, she is just the cliche of someone who finds herself in the middle of a particular series of events. The movie is a melodrama which relies on recognizable big emotions. I’ve never seen so much crying, hugging, kissing, and more crying except in soaps.

But…

I bought this movie because Mads Mikkelsen was in it and because it was nominated for an Oscar. After watching it today and feeling terribly disappointed I was curious what the reviews said. To my surprise all reviews at Rotten Tomatoes were positive. One reviewer called it soap but still gave it 4 stars. So everybody agrees with you, not with me.

What i found different was,

Wealthy man , Corporate Bigshot, but submissive to reality. I thought he would
show arrogant/cynic attitude but not.
Then the twist of his health.
I liked the Katewalker/Syberia type dilemma Mads faced, to choose between Indian and Danish life, with their specific variables.

I think daughter and Wife were not as central to main plot of Dilemma faced by Mads.
Had it been other writer/director he would have asked for sex between mads and his old love behind the curtains, now that would have been bad cliche.

Everyone was going smooth, and all of sudden life becomes conflicted.
Husband, wife, daughter, old lover all face conflicting emotions and hard decisions.

I didn’t mean that all the plot twists are predictable I saw the health issue coming only a few seconds before the wife found out. It’s the details, the emotional stuff. Example: At the funeral I expected the wife to turn her head and look at Jacob. She did. It was all there, the smiles through tears, the father-daughter comforting. Jacob even zipped up the twins coats, just like Jorgen had done.

BTW, I found the family man very arrogant. The whole idea of arranging other people’s lives! And remember that drunken scene in the restaurant?

The Norweigans have made some incredibly good movies in recent years IMO. From adventure-dramas like Kon-Tiki and Max Manus to horror-comedies like Død snø (Dead Snow) and Trolljegeren (Troll Hunter).

The Danish animated drama Princess is really well done (it throws a lot of punches to the porn industry). I also agrees with TimovieMan that Låt den rätte komma in (Let the right one in) is a must-see.
