I wouldn’t play:
Lighthouse (played it a long time ago and thought it sucked)

Well, there’s now a posted walkthrough for the game. Maybe you should take a look. See what you did that resulted in your negative opinion, and say you’ll give it a shot and lead the game.

I almost want to say yes, just so we can get the playthrough out of the way and never have to talk about the game again.

But yes, it was probably frustration with some part of the game, given I was young at the time. I remember some recurring event and the game giving you no idea what you’re supposed to do. But then, this was Sierra’s attempt to capitalize on Myst’s success, so they probably thought it was a good idea to throw obtuse puzzles in there.

I have been thinking about volunteering to lead Lighthouse, but I have to check to see which of my older Macs will run my CDs before I commit to it.

But then, this was Sierra’s attempt to capitalize on Myst‘s success, so they probably thought it was a good idea to throw obtuse puzzles in there.

Only partially true. Sierra had already gone the Myst route with the two Shivers games. According to my correspondence with Jon Bock back in the Compuserve days, this was not only a Myst-type game, but it was Ken Williams’ idea for an entre into a Lara Croft-type game. Personally, I see no comparison between the two, but I will take the designer at his word.

Well that pretty much confirms to my mind that Ken Williams doesn’t have the slightest idea about game design. I suspect this was along the lines of the discussion leading up to the development of Lighthouse:

Ken: “I don’t get it. The 7th Guest sold 2 million copies. Spooky story with frustrating standalone puzzles. Then I make Shivers and it doesn’t sell nearly as well.”
Roberta: “Well, what did you expect? Once you’ve banged your head against a wall with hours of frustrating standalone puzzles, would YOU want to do it again?
Ken: “I see your point. Well what about Myst? People liked Myst. Empty worlds, portal travel, pretty vistas, nonsensical story. That will sell, I’m sure of it.”
Roberta: “Yes, dear. Whatever you say. If you need me I’ll be in the hot tub.”

Please put me down for Ghost Vigil.

And I expect this might be too late to attract many votes, but I’d like to see if Return of the Phantom is of interest to anyone. It is a game I have been curious about for years and I see it is now on GOG.

Never even heard of it before, but it does look very interesting, I’ll go for it.
