I’m sure that people that found the gameplay in Heavy Rain to be insufficient will think so here too. I was not bothered at all but I like games like this and To the Moon etc. I have to admit Dear Esther was a bit too lacking in gameplay even for me, but it wasn’t horrible or anything.

My spouse can’t stand games that have just a story and some roaming around and clicking a couple of things, to me the story has always been much bigger concern and it can seriously fix the weaker parts of the game. Though honestly I think the QTE style has worked rather well in Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls. (In Fahrenheit the action scenes were horrible.)

I agree for Dear Esther. It was like just going around doing nothing, but what i realy like was the wrapped story and it was dificult for me to understand. Trying to understand what’s going on in the story gave me the feeling of urge to finish it. Visuals was beautiful, landscapes was breathtaking, the narator was calm and emotional. It’s not an ordinary game (some don’t call it a game) but it was fun experience to go through.

I just finished Legend of Kyrandia 2 - Hand of Fate. I’ve played it before, more than a decade ago, but this was the first time I’ve played it with voice acting. A fantastic experience, though a little obtuse at times. Not as good as the old LucasArts games, but a close second.

Duckman: Can you believe it? Five hundred bucks for a parking ticket?
Cornfed Pig: You parked in a handicapped zone.
Duckman: Who cares? Nobody parks there anyway, except for the people who are supposed to park there and, hell, I can outrun them anytime.

Recently finished Secret Files: Sam Peters

Good

- Nice graphics and environments (Jungle)
- Sam is pretty cool, hope we see more of her
- Good voice actress
- Some decent puzzles (the code, etc)

Bad

- Too short
- Hardly any character interaction
- Easy rehash puzzles
- Generic story
- Cursing does not fit the game

I give the game a 5,5/10

First post Smile

The last adventure game I finished was The Dream Machine (what’s finished at least) and it’s very good, interesting story, the art style is amazing and the atmosphere is soothing and somewhat creepy at the same time.

I just finished “Nancy Drew Resorting to Danger” - an HOG game I got for 3 dollars from the clearance rack.

For 3 dollars it was OK.

I enjoy playing adventure games on my Alienware M17 r4 and my Nintendo Switch OLED.

Just completed Thief 4

It was a really enjoyable return to the series, having played them in the late 1990’s.

Most enjoyable aspect was the nostalgic return of the premise, characters & stealing loot with some neat new updates.

Least enjoyable aspect was the technical issues i.e lag & NPC pathing etc…  linear areas to use gear i.e rope arrows & the accomplishments for play style approach were head scratching to figure out what actions effected each style. And i found myself worrying more about that at times than playing the game. Needed to be more simplistic.

4.5/5   Thumbs Up

MGSV: GroundZeroes (PS3)

Pros

- Sick and Dark story(controversial stuff kojima wasnt kidding).
- Good Villian character development.
- Best gameplay of the series, fun and intense however AI was wonky at times.
- Music and Graphics are rad.
- Kiefer is not all bad, but somehow hard to distinguish Snakes voice from Millers.

Cons

- Good fix to ease waiting game of Real proper MGSV , but also makes it harder to wait.
- Complete ripoff, though it has good content still not worhty more than 20$,
(30$ at max). Funny how people are paying even more than that.

Wolfenstein

Pros

- Starbreeze guys disbanded to form New company and their wisdom shines
through narrative. They have turned generic hero and IP in something memorable.
Feeling of the talent that brought you Butcherbay and Darkness shines here too.

- Fun as hell FPS gameplay, thats a very difficult thing to pull off in saturated
market, right balance of oldschool gameplay plus keeping it fresh with weapon addons.
Core gameplay is too much fun.

- Game is long , some great levels, the f**king moon  in particular.

- Really solid VA, music and gun sounds.

Cons

- Idtech5 is hit and miss, on 360 there are many random bad textures.
- Moon level is short, wish outer Moon exploration segments were long.

9/10

Best AAA game of first half 2014.

I just finished the PS4 version.

I wouldn’t rate it as highly as you,but it was a surprise. I was totally expecting the standard wolfenstein corridor shooter.  what I got was a lot more interesting. I didn’t expect as much sneaking in a run and gunner, dual welding every weapon was fun as hell, and a branching story….ok that last one was a tad generous.

However it was a well made fun ride with a bonkers plot and even better gameplay.

I would probably give it a solid 7 or 8.

An adventure game is nothing more than a good story set with engaging puzzles that fit seamlessly in with the story and the characters, and looks and sounds beautiful.

Yay, I’m playing games again! Tongue

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask - 3/5

The fifth installment in the Professor Layton series delivers what you should expect by now: an over-the-top story that’s slowly revealed to you, one puzzle at a time.

Alas, after four games of basically the same formula over and over again, the series is now starting to run thin. The gameplay could really use an overhaul, and I thought the transition to the 3DS would be perfect for that. Unfortunately it was not to be.

While there are advantages to the 3DS switch (more quality cutscenes, more voiced lines, a couple of puzzles with added flair), there are also a few pitfalls that they didn’t avoid. Changing the wonderful 2D character animations to 3D ones isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, for one. While they tried to make the 3D models resemble the 2D ones closely through cel-shading, somehow in the process they lost some of the charm inherent in the artwork, and it hurts the game (especially in contrast with the beautiful and top notch 2D cutscenes). And it also feels like they didn’t take full advantage of the new capabilities the 3DS has to offer. Either the console was still too new when this game was in production, or the developers were too rusted in their old ways. Whatever it was, I feel that they left a lot of potential untapped and while this may improve the odds for the sixth game (Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy), I’m not that sure this team will go for it…

I’m not overly happy with the story’s resolution either. It lacked a good twist (as the main twist was more or less phoned in from the very beginning), and they kind of shoehorned a certain villain in, just to fit this game into a trilogy. Several of the main characters have really silly motivations as well, so you’d better not think too hard about it (but this holds true for the other Layton games as well).

In the end, though, I got a game with (once again) high production values, a great deal of puzzles (150 + minigames), and a staggering 365 daily downloadable puzzles. All these combined netted me about a 60-hour puzzle fix, so while this installment may be the weakest of the Layton series so far, it’s by no means a bad one. I just hope the devs step up their game somewhat in the conclusion to this prequel trilogy…

Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka
