Interesting untranslated AGs

While watching this YT review of the german PnC The Cave World Saga, where he used a program to insta-translate it into english, I found myself thinking about all the other gems out there begging for a proper one. And please do share your thoughts regarding those that are brought up here if you’ve played them!

Capcom’s Fushigi Deka definitely piqued my interest. There aren’t simply enough anthropomorphic doggies doing fine police work in gaming! Its cover also doesn’t disappoint.

i know there are a number of those out there i wanted to play but nothing really overwhelming but this one I always remembered; a Russian Space Quest game/rip-off, called Ivan Lozhkin: Price of Freedom

There are plenty.

Hollywood Monsters, Tony Tough 2, etc. These have fan translations though, so there’s a way to play them.

I saw an interesting AGS game a while back, but I can’t immediately remember what it was.

The last untranslated game I have bought is Onironauta, I think, doesn’t look excessively interesting, but it was like 30 cents during some Steam sale, so why not?

Stunning background art! I’ve never heard of this one, have you tried it? I’m surprised there isn’t an english patch already simply for what it is.

There are plenty.

But which do you find to be the most interesting ones? I’m sure an italian LSD trip is fun n’ all, but I’ll go out on a limb here and say it doesn’t top your charts Crazy

Another one with amazing art is the storybook-like Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari (aka The Tale of Seven Winds Island) for the Saturn. I mean, just look at it! They were doing an english and spanish fan translation a while ago, but I don’t know if it’s still alive atm. Too many dead projects to count.

Well, I don’t know if these qualify exactly, but The Prince and the Coward is one.

The “problem” here is that some people are working on ScummVM fan translation, so that game may or may not be untranslated, depending on how you define it…

Thematically I am drawn to Mission Supernova, which is even freeware, but doesn’t look very stunning graphically, even though graphics shouldn’t be the main focus.

As a concept, I like Das Telekommando series. Free point-and-click games to promote telecommunications company. We need more games like that!

I’m forgetting a lot of stuff here. I have a mental image of some Spanish (language) game but I can’t bring it back to me right now. Also, there are some AGS freeware games, but it would take ages to search for those, as it’s not clearly in my mind either.

But OK, let’s say Las Vegas, that graphical adventure which preceded Al Lowe’s Leisuire Suit Larry, but both are remakes of Softporn Adventure.

Well, I can tell you that The Prince and the Coward isn’t that good. It was sold in Germany as Galador, and I didn’t enjoy it that much. The world seemed a little empty, and the puzzles weren’*t that good either. Same goes for the story. It’s mediocre at best.

The only thing that made me laufgh in that game was that ruffian dwarf in the tavern, who bullied everyone but the female sidekick. When you use a magic item that allows you to read people’s minds on him, you can see that he’s dreaming about dancing over a field of flowers like a ballerina.

I played the unpublished English version of Hollywood Monsters on my win98 machine. Excellent English voiceacting. Too bad Pendulo never did anything with it, for reasons unknown. It is twenty-two years old now and will never see the light of day.

Anybody who knows German can play it. Galador: Der Fluch des Prinzen. Fun game, not great, but quite good imo.

EDIT: The English edition of Hollywood Monsters was reviewed at Four Fat Chicks (now Tap Repeatedly).

LOL hear, hear! There’re a ton of unorthodox themes like that hidden behind a cruel language barrier. And it doesn’t even matter if it’s a chore to play in this case; it doesn’t hurt that its pixel art looks mighty tasty too, of course.

I’ve just googled it and I’m loving the 80s manga artstyle Heart Eyes it also deserves an eng. translation just for its historical relevance! Japan really has a ton of erotic graphical adventures out there with gorgeous pixel art for days, like dear old Possessioner here:

(There’s an ongoing translation project btw)

Thanks LittleRose (and Karlok too) for sharing your experiences with these games. I’ll be sure to edit the OP to ask folks like you to give their 2 cents just so we can get an idea of their quality Grin

I played a few hours of the Spanish version of Hollywood Monsters with fan made English subtitles but had to quit. An overwhelming number of inventory items with an equally overwhelming number of areas to use them, coupled with a game design philosophy that every puzzle solution must be as illogical/silly as possible is never fun imo. Reminded me of Pendulo’s previous (first?) game Igor: Objective Uikokahonia in that department.

I really enjoyed Pendulo’s own remake of Hollywood Monsters though, The Next BIG Thing.

One game that I’d like an official translation of is the second Miles Edgeworth game in the Phoenix Wright spin-off series. I’ve heard it’s not very good, but I really loved the first one on the Nintendo DS.

You mean Gyakuten Kenji 2? There’s a really well done fan translation for it that even recycled the proper english dub reactions, in case you’re unaware. And there’s also an english translation for the other spin-off, The Great Ace Attorney: The Adventure of Ryūnosuke Naruhodō, which is set during the Meiji Period.

Many thanks for the link! I’d heard of a fan translation but I never really investigated further.

Hollywood Monsters puzzles are considered insane in Spain. I never played it but I liked the remake The Next Big Thing.

A friend of mine is trying to translate The Prince and the Coward into Spanish. He had problems with the fonts but I think he has solved them.

Currently translating Strangeland into Spanish. Wish me luck, or send me money to my Paypal haha

My name’s GateKeeper, and I want to be a pirate!

I knew they planned to release the game in English and then cancelled that, but I didn’t know that some kind of beta version is in circulation.

I tried to find it, but checking some abandonware and torrent sites really didn’t work. Has it been leaked on the Internet, or are there just few lucky people who have physical copies?

As I have a legal Spanish version, technically speaking I don’t think I would even be pirating it, hah.  Tongue

Anyway, does anyone know somebody who works at Pendulo, or GOG? This would be a good release for GOG, it probably would be relatively easy to finish it. Or they could even release it unfinished, just make it a bonus goodie for The Next Big Thing which they already have there.

I wonder if those parts which aren’t in English really are not there, or if they are on the disc (or at least exist elsewhere) but the game is only accessing wrong files.

It was sent to gaming sites for review purposes. Not just to FFChicks, I know for a fact Randy at Just Adventure had a copy because I discussed the English version with one of his reviewers in private. Good luck finding a copy. You won’t get it from me, but I’m sure it can be done.

You haven’t seen the disc but you already “know” the game is only accessing the wrong files. How like you.  Thumbs Up

EDIT: Here’s the intro with English voices.

He doesn’t. He’s just wondering if the English parts are missing, or if they’re present but the game accesses the wrong files for those bits.
He’s not making an actual assumption on what went wrong or why, just thinking aloud.

Did you notice I put the word “know” in quotation marks? No? Well, I did. Tongue

And he could have asked me if the Spanish voices for the entire game are on the disk as well (or the game would not be able to access the wrong files) but he’s much better at telling than asking. I’m sure he can find a copy somewhere and then he’ll have all the answers. I have already helped him enough by posting that link and the info about the review copies.
