Arkhangel: The House of the Seven Stars

Hey all -

I don’t want to waste everyone’s time with a ton of self-promotion on this site; because I’d rather just chat about adventure games themselves, so I’ll do this one thread and periodically update with big news from time to time but I’ll keep most of that to our blog, newsletter, and social media feeds.

Anyway, “Arkhangel: The House of the Seven Stars” is a point & click built in Unity3D with the Adventure Creator system and it’s based off of a short story that I was plunking around with over 10 years ago.  I would work on it for awhile, realize that I didn’t really know how to tell that narrative, and put it away.

It was in 2012 when I was playing through a bunch of old Sierra games that it finally clicked.  I COULD tell the story the way I wanted to in an adventure game setting.  I gave my brother a ring, I hashed out the story outline and the design doc in a couple of months and began prototyping.

I had a bunch of my own systems in place but they were all rudimentary and…to be frank…not all that great.  Once Adventure Creator was released, all bets were off.  I’ve been in active production on this thing in my off-hours for a couple of years.  This involved building out locations, creating levels, tweaking systems, building shaders, texturing, modeling, animating, etc, etc, etc…

While I still have a long way to go, I’m at a point now that I feel comfortable showing it off and talking about it a bit more.

With that being said, here’s the full info-dump…unceremoniously ripped from our webpage (http://www.winternightgames.com):

Teaser Trailer:

About the Game:

Arkhangel: The House of the Seven Stars is a point & click adventure horror game told through the eyes of a family that has recently moved to an isolated town in the frozen lands to the north. Explore, research, uncover mysteries, solve puzzles, and interact with a large cast of characters in this rich and layered story.

Michael, Lily, and Gabrielle have recently moved to the frigid town of Haven under tragic circumstances. As they begin to rebuild their lives in this new home and meet the townsfolk of Haven, they quickly discover that not everything is what it appears to be. Michael struggles with dreams of dark waters and an unknown ancient evil resting beneath the cold waves. Are these simply dreams or are they a premonition of things to come?

Key Features:

+ 3D Point & Click-style adventure game
+ Play as two different characters throughout the game
+ Deep narrative with abundant lore to discover and absorb
+ Large cast of characters to speak and interact with
+ Cinematic musical score by Chad Seiter (chadseiter.com)
+ Direct tie-in to the tabletop game, Arkhangel: The Great Nameless – also by Winter Night Games (winternightgames.com)

Screenshots and more info at the main page:

You can also do the social media thing from that site if that’s up your alley.  We’ll do more micro-updates from those channels, but I’ll happily answer any questions you might have in this thread!

Well…things that I’m ready to answer, at least.  :-D

Anyway, thanks for reading!

That “k” in Archangel shouldn’t be there and looks jarring, more like a mistake than an edgy, deliberate misspelling, though I wish you luck too.

Hey all!

I put together a quick gameplay teaser for Arkhangel.  Check it out if you get the chance!

This is already using some old footage but I got to the point where I was updating things so rapidly, that I needed to say “ENOUGH” and go through what I had and put something together.  Plus, it was just good to take a step back from development and do something linear.  Smile

Hope you all are doing well!

Looks great; wishlisted!

Edit:  Hmmm, no voice acting?  The game looks too high quality to go without.

Thanks, dumbeur!

Yeah, we decided that we wouldn’t go the VO route early on for a number of reasons:

1) I wanted to recapture the 1990s point & click adventure atmosphere and have deep lore and character development that the player immerses themselves in by exploring, reading a lot and discovering things about the world, character relationships, etc…
2) We’re self-funding and if you want to do VO right, it gets really expensive, really quickly.  We could have crowd-sourced it, but that can be really hit/miss quality both in performance and production.  Since I’m an audio director by trade, I wanted to do it right or not do it at all.  I didn’t want it to be cheesy and shoehorn it in just because we didn’t have the money.
3) We have a looooooot of dialogue and lore in the game…so it sort of ties back up to #2 (I think we’re sitting at around 8,000 lines of dialogue/lore).  We drive things with sound effects, music, and atmosphere.

Ultimately, it came down to original concept/direction and quality vs. resources and budget.

That’s not to say that I’m against VO at all.  I would very much like to do it, so perhaps if we recoup our costs, I can do a voice pack for it in the future and do it right.  For now, though, I dig the 1990s idea of reading everything.  It takes me back to being super immersed in the world and the characters on my own terms.  If you liked those old point & clicks, I think you’ll dig it too!  I hope so, any way! I’m pretty proud of it…even though it’s taken FOREVER to get it done.  ;-)

This one was my assumption.  Two guys trying to fund voicing what looks like and epic adventure would be tough.

No worries though, it still looks excellent and it’s still on my wishlist. Wink

Also as someone who has aspirations to one day make my own adventure game I really enjoyed reading the details of your project over on your site.

Awesome, thanks dumbeur!  Yeah, we enjoy documenting some of our processes since we’re learning so much as we go.  It’s as much as a reference point for us to revisit certain processes as it is to share with others…since there’s SO much that went into this game, I have to remind myself how the hell I did a few things from time to time.

It’s certainly not wall to wall horror.  It’s a bit of a slow burn, but yes…it can get creepy and there is some subject matter that won’t be everyone’s cup of tea (lots of cult-y/ritual-y sort of stuff).
