All-time favourite movies?

Since Lady Kestrel suggested that an all-time favourite movie thread would be fun, here goes:

What are your all-time favourite movies?

I’ll start by listing all 34 movies I’ve ever given 5/5 (which, considering I’ve seen over 10000 films, isn’t all that many). Since I don’t have a particular order for any of them (except for the top 5), I’ll sort them by release year.

Edit: there are 70 movies that I’ve given 4.5/5, and since 4 of those are actually silent short movies (from the VERY early days of cinema), I tossed those out to get to a cool 100.

That makes this list my personal all-time top 100 movies! Cool

1.
Pulp Fiction (1994)

2.
American Beauty (1999)

3-5.
12 Angry Men (1957)

Just in case you wanted to know what those silent short movies were:
Blacksmith Scene (1893)
Le voyage dans la lune (1902)
The Great Train Robbery (1903)
A Corner in Wheat (1909)

Looking at that list, it’s actually quite amazing how few horror movies and comedies I give 4.5/5 or 5/5. I mean, I love Monty Python and the Marx Brothers, yet they’re only represented with one movie each (no Duck Soup, no Holy Grail).

Plus it saddens me that it’s been four years since I last gave a movie 4.5 or 5. Either I’m becoming more and more disgruntled or movie quality sucks these days… Tongue
Although that apparent dry spell may explain why I was so enthusiastic when I gave The Man from Earth its 4.5 earlier this year.

Oh, and there are over 200 movies which have gotten 4 stars out of five from me. And I will NOT be listing those (despite 4/5 being the cut-off point for brilliance in my book)... Tongue

We do have the similar taste in games, but it’s even more similar with movies - however, you should really squeeze Open Your Eyes in there. Crazy

TimovieMan - 23 September 2013 06:24 PM

12 Angry Men (1957)
Ben-Hur (1959)

Nice classic choices - I’m a big fan of history epics, so let me add also the best version of Robin Hood, The Three Musketeers (70s versions with Michael York are also great) and Knights of the Round Table.

Recently finished: Four Last Things 4/5, Edna & Harvey: The Breakout 5/5, Chains of Satinav 3,95/5, A Vampyre Story 88, Sam Peters 3/5, Broken Sword 1 4,5/5, Broken Sword 2 4,3/5, Broken Sword 3 85, Broken Sword 5 81, Gray Matter 4/5\nCurrently playing: Broken Sword 4, Keepsake (Let\‘s Play), Callahan\‘s Crosstime Saloon (post-Community Playthrough)\nLooking forward to: A Playwright’s Tale

I’m glad I twisted your arm, Tim.  Your list has lot of movies I’ve enjoyed and some I haven’t seen yet.  Das Boot was a very powerful movie that didn’t need subtitles.  I saw it in the theater when it first came out but haven’t seen it since.  I think it’s time for another viewing.

Most of these movies I saw for the first time on the big screen.  Some, like the original Star Wars and Dr. Zhivago, I went back to see many times.  Because I like them for different reasons, I find them difficult to rate, so I just listed them alphabetically.

2001: A Space Odyssey
The Addams Family
The African Queen
Alice in Wonderland (Tim Burton)
Alien
Alien Nation
Amadeus
Babe
Bagdad Cafe
Being There
Blade Runner
The Butcher’s Wife
Cannery Row
Chariots of Fire
Doctor Zhivago
Dune
Elephant Man
Excalibur
The Fifth Element
Ghostbusters
The Gods Must Be Crazy
The Green Mile
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
How Green Was My Valley
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Inn of the Sixth Happiness
Jumanji
Jurassic Park
The Last Starfighter
Little Big Man
Local Hero
Meetings with Remarkable Men
Men in Black
The Muppets
Murder by Death
The Pink Panther
Raiders of the Lost Ark
A Room with a View
The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!
The Shawshank Redemption
Star Wars
Starman
The Sting
The Ten Commandments

Hmm… I think I’ll try to keep this as short as possible. But let’s see now…

In the Mood for Love
(and probably 2046 being its kind-of-sequel)
Ghost Dog
Mulholland Drive
Life of Brian
The Truman Show
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Ocean’s Eleven
& Twelve (& maybe Thirteen)

(not really in order, though the Ocean’s Movies are maybe not quite on the level of the others Wink But still obviously amongst my definite favorites)

The Lord of the Rings movies used to be there, Amarcord could very well be there, I expect Solaris will be there once I just get around to watching it Grin (I mean, the original Solaris)

And I’m sure I’m forgetting some, I always do.

Perhaps I should add The Naked Gun movies (at least the first two) Smile I’ve seen them so many times, but they still manage to make me laugh at times. Also maybe O Brother Where Art Thou?.

I’m not really much of a film buff, but like anyone completely ignorant of the arts, I know what I like! Wink

Mulholland Drive (seriously, the club silencio scene… wow.)
Inception
Four Lions
Naked Gun (principally the first one)
Back to the Future (principally the first one)
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Lord of the Rings (honestly not sure which is the best)
Pulp Fiction
Blue Velvet
Society

...and probably quite a few more.

Not necessarily in order but Mulholland Drive belongs at the top!

Carlito’s Way

What a movie!!

Two other crime favourites are State of Grace and Sleepers. And I don’t why I’ve just thought of Good Will Hunting.

The Departed
Reservoir Dogs
The Departed
Reservoir Dogs

You must like these a lot, you mention them twice!
Btw, may I recommend Infernal Affairs (the Hong Kong film that was remade as The Departed)? Because the original is imo a LOT better than The Departed.

I know one: Cujo. The film was mediocre, but it was still better than the book which is imo one of the worst things Stephen King has written. That book was unworthy of his name.

An adventure game is nothing more than a good story set with engaging puzzles that fit seamlessly in with the story and the characters, and looks and sounds beautiful.

Lord of the Rings movies are better than the books.

You’re stepping too much into the subjective territory - I would agree with you, because I haven’t read the books Foot in mouth, but what about the book fans?

Also, in my book (see what I did there?) in order for a film to be better than the source material it needs to change something, mainly with the script and “generally” accepted as “better” - because, you can’t say Lord of the Rings movies are better than the book because there’s a cool Viggo Mortensen in it - as they’re different arts.

Lord of the Rings movies are better than the books.

Only if you don’t like to read.

Great adaptations and a visible labo(u)r of GREAT love LotR movies are (I love them!), but I still prefer the books. Yes, I’ve read those (unlike Diego ).

These are the movies I have given a 10/10 on imdb (not in any particular order). I haven’t updated the list for a while though. And there are loads of 9/10 movies that might actually be closer to 5/5 than 4.5/5.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Monsters Inc.
The Fifth Element
Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain

Practically every Kubrick film is better than the original books (with the exception of Lolita perhaps…) - and I love reading. I only agree with you in the fact that, in general,  using your imagination is better (but that only applies to the cases where there is a good reading material or when a movie tries to be strict to the script of the original source. If a filmmaker tries to add his/her own touch however and is skilled enough, things can go the other way around).

Yes, what about us?

The movies are a also great but in my humble opinion the books are still better, and adds nuances and side stories that aren’t present in the movies.

Edit: In my opinion movie adaptations are 99.99% of the time only better than the book, if the book is a short story, otherwise too much is simply lost in the movie.

You have all mentioned some great movies where many of them would also find a way into my personal top 100 list, if I had one that is. Generally I try to restrict myself to top 3 or 5 lists.

So here is my personal top 3 list:

1. Blade Runner (Ridley Scot)
2. Dancer in the Dark (Lars von Trier)
3. AI (Steven Spielberg)

Oddly enough, no one else has mentioned Dancer in the Dark or AI on their top lists!

Mr 21! Really! Gasp

How came you to form such an opinion?! The films, brilliant as they are, greatly (and necessarily) lack the depth of the book(s) on any view surely?
