Adventure Game Scene of the Day — Tuesday 31 July 2012
Don’t forget to pick up some maggots, you’ll need them later!
When it comes to adventure/RPG hybrids, most people think of Quest for Glory, but AdventureSoft’s (then named HorrorSoft) Elvira is a very nice game too. Avoid Elvira II, which suffers acutely from sequelitis (more of the same, but so much more of it that it sucks all the fun out), and don’t get me started on the punishing Waxworks, but Elvira is a fun game that mixes exploration, inventory puzzles, spell-making(*) and some combat. I replay it from time to time and I’m really fond of it.
(*) I’ve come to realize that, when it comes to flora, my vocabulary is more extensive in English than in my mother tongue. I definitely credit Elvira for that. 
Is that jelly in the bottom row 4th from the left? 
Yup. It’s called Wooden Heart in Algae Sauce, and it restores your health.
My uncle used to freak me out by showing me the gory moments from the Elvira game on his 386. They still creep me out.
