Cheerful, light and fun
28 November 2019 02:29 AM
Hi everyone!
I’m looking for new-ish (within the last few years) recommendations.
“Happy and fun” is the theme I’m looking for. No spooky stuff, killings, serious themes please.
Thanks

I’m going to recommend Frog Detective: The Haunted Island.

It is definitely cheerful, light and fun and I know you said no spooky stuff but it’s the least spooky game set on a Haunted Island I’ve ever played.

Chuchel comes to mind. (Also older games by Amanita, but they wouldn’t be new-ish.) Nelly Cootalot may work as well.

I’ve been looking for those for ages, but even Hypnospace Outlaw ends on a sad note. Seems like people are into depressive and horror stuff these days. The only game I can think of is the last Leisure Suit Larry game.
PC means personal computer

“Captain Disaster in: Death has a Million Stomping Boots”.
Light and fun, I am really enjoying it.
Currently translating Strangeland into Spanish. Wish me luck, or send me money to my Paypal haha

Lumino City is from 2014 but definitely fits the theme.

Mr. Maze (2019), ultimately designed for younger players, therefore light-hearted and easy to play. Mostly first-person exploration of 3D environments. The story does not take itself too seriously but players have said they found it enjoyable in its own (strange) way

Some fairly recent games that cheered me up a deal (including some already quoted):
- Nelly Cootalot and the Fowl Fleet (fun, very sweet, and a good adventure game in all regards)
- Kelvin and the Infamous Machine (another high-quality game with lots of humour)
- The Darkside Detective (there is a paranormal theme but it never gets spooky, it’s treated in a humorous manner)
- Gorogoa (not especially cheerful, but beautiful, relaxing and devoid of any violence)
- The Low Road (a comedy brimming with spy-movie tropes that never takes itself seriously and has a rather cheerful art style)
- Wailing Heights (a game about monster musicians, very upbeat, but with some unfortunate glitches)

From your facebook page:
“If you dont show this guy the id chip within 5 seconds, he vaporizes you with his blaster”
I find it puzzling what people regard as light/cheerful these days. Are we too desensitized to finding threats around every corner?

I think that’s light and cheerful in the spirit of Space Quest.
Giving five seconds to react is actually very generous compared to what Space Quest had, and that wasn’t “these days”, that was 30 years ago.

The game itself is an over the top comedy. it is light and fun because of the plot, the premise of the game, the humor, etc. Look at a film like Spaceballs for instance, it has violence in it, but would you say that Spaceballs isn’t “light and fun”? We are talking about cartoon violence here, no different from a bugs bunny cartoon. Why play a game without any threat of a “game over”? even light, fun games have that
