Hi,

I really like Detective Di. It was cool to get to play in that historical setting.

To answer your question:
One of my favorite games To the Moon along with the other games by Freebird Games (main developer is Kan Gao from Ontario.)

When the Past Was Around - Indonesian developers Mojken, the publisher Toge is also releasing A Space for the unbound which looks promising.

Another unreleased game that looks promising is The Crimson Diamond by Julia Minamata also from Ontario.

Rakuen by Laura Shigihara

Thanks for the compliment!

I knew about Toge but did not know much about When The Past Was Around. I think it definitely fits the bill.

The “overhead camera” games like To The Moon and Rakuen are really interesting too.

Okay, I assumed you meant Asian voices even if the games themselves weren’t necessarily developed in Asian countries so I’m glad I was on the right track.

There are also some Japanese games developed by independent studios and published by larger studios like Hotel Dusk / Last Window developed by Cing and published by Nintendo.

I vaguely playing some horror police investigation game last year that I assumed was Japanese; side-view adventure thing, pixel-style graphics of sorts. I think. Some police officer investigating when a seriel killer reappears and there’s something about an ex-boyfriend ... maybe ... or maybe I’m completely confused and it’s not actually Japanese ^^;

... Tokyo Dark? Right, yes, that’s it.
“Based near Tokyo, Japan, we are inspired by Japanese pop culture, anime aesthetic and Western adventure games.

Our international team members are from 5 different countries and we pool our multicultural experience to make story focused games for an international audience.”

e: ofc I know see that GateKeeper has already mentioned it. Urk.

There’s Strange Telephone and Unreal Life. Both visually similar, but by different developers.

There’s the Crimson Room series, which were originally flash escape room games but have also been ported for the DS and PSP. Few years back the developer released Crimson Room Decade.

Could also include Corpse Party as that has indie origins

Edit:
Oh, there’s also the Opus series developed by Sigono

Love this question! I wanted to leave a quick reply.

Glad Mojiken was already mentioned. Strong recommendation there.

“Sumatra: Fate of Yandi” came to mind, but I did some digging and I’m not sure the developers have Asian roots or heritage.

I hope you’re on board with including one Visual Novel. I noticed you didn’t and made a point of this, but I think this one deserves a mention. I’ll dive into more traditional adventure game territory when I get back to this thread with more time on my hands.

Nuclear Fishin’ Software, the team that developed “Four Horsemen”. Self-described as an “all-immigrant team, hailing from a variety of different nationalities and backgrounds”. I’m not sure if NFS as a team/company is still around, but it’s founder, Kevin Chen, is still in the game, as far as I can tell. He is of Taiwanese heritage and seems to have a lot of ideas relating to storytelling and game development.

I also just remembered a freeware game I played a while ago, called “46 Memory Lane”. It is creepy AF, just a warning in advance. I’m not sure if the person behind it still considers himself a game developer, but this game does fit the bill. https://shama.work/

Also: Thank you for making games!

Edit: came up with two more suggestions:  https://store.steampowered.com/curator/35390620 a team based in Chengdu and
https://store.steampowered.com/search/?publisher=Cotton+Game a team in Shanghai.

Just here to express my appreciation for Detective Di: Silk Rose Murders

A win in independent game development and a bigger win in storytelling.

@Trickless

Isn’t Corpse Party basically a visual novel?

I can think of a bunch of Japanese adventure games to list but basically none if it’s restricted to indie devs.

The Spirit Hunter series by Experience is one I’ve played through recently.
