The bizarre adventures of Woodruff and Schnibble

The only puzzle I recall having trouble with was the game node with the owl in the tree.  You had to solve a crossword, and if you got any of the answers wrong you lose a turn and the game.  It was annoying as I found no way of skipping past the initial dialogue every time I had to restart that puzzle.  I finally got it, and that is one thing I should have written down or took a screen capture of.  My bad.

When you say you lose the game, do you mean you get perma-stuck or die, or you just have to redo the game with the owl again?

Hey OP, I’ve got a boxed copy of the game, it’s opened but more or less new. If you’re interested you can PM me.

If I recall, 3 wrong guesses on the crossword puzzle lead to a game over with the owl and brings about a redo of the puzzle/game.

I hate you all. This thread made me replay Woodruff.

(That says a lot about how awful Runaway 2 is that I’d rather replay Woodruff than get back to it.)

And I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe it’s because I could remember most of the puzzles, but I enjoyed the game more than I expected.

There are lots of things to dislike. The game is painfully unfunny, despite it being convinced that it’s hilarious (and being very smug about it). The writing and voice acting (in the original French) are porn-worthy (if that). Some puzzles are really dubious—the worst offender is probably having to re-explore the city several times to go and look for the Chinese guy. (Nice racist caricature, by the way! When was that game made, again? The 50s?) Also, the non-linear puzzle design gets really overwhelming after a while; I remember getting stuck a lot the first time around simply because I couldn’t keep every puzzle element in existence in mind. And then there are those ugly script bugs I mentioned earlier.

Still, I have to recognise that the game’s structure is impressive. The way the game starts in a restricted area but keeps expanding, the way it introduces new gameplay elements (the syllables, the spells, etc.)—it’s all really clever. As I said, I think it gets too big and complex for its own good at times, but I can’t help but be impressed by the ambition of the puzzle design. I can’t even imagine what the puzzle dependency chart for that one looked like. And, contrary to other heavily-non-linear games such as Leisure Suit Larry 7 or Day of the Tentacle, the game still manages to make the plot progress significantly at regular intervals during its course.

At a time when games tend to be more and more divided into small chapters (or episodes) with independent locations and inventories, I have to admit that Woodruff’s sprawling world and non-linear puzzle design felt refreshing.

Great review!

what review? (no pun intended)

You rang?  Naughty

That was fast!

I suggest someone open a new topic where we can share our experiences with Who’s Fat Lou.

Note that the game has two major script bugs (none of which were fixed by ScummVM AFAIK), which led to being able to skip a section of the game and to a nasty dead end.

Would you care to elaborate this statement? Please. I’m replaying Woodruff right now and I wouldn’t like to miss anything or to (heaven forbid!) get stuck.

P.S. I love you.

What a wonderful PS! I’ve seen the light, no more negativity.

God, I’m gonna cry in a minute. Your fault, zorba.

Goodbye people!

I knew you‘d take a bait!

Besides, I reckoned I should be more friendly in public forums in order to improve my image and get to be loved by everyone.

1) In Slammers End, there’s a tunnel that leads to the secret lab (see screenshot). When you first visit the screen, the tunnel is closed and it’s not even a hotspot. However, when you return to the screen a second time, a hotspot has appeared there, allowing you to go through the tunnel. You should not do that. You should only use the tunnel once you’ve unlocked it from the other side (the laboratory). Otherwise, some of the stuff in the lab/asylum will make no sense, and you’ll be able to skip a section of the game (the factory).

2) In the boozook temple, you get codes to unlock the doors to some of the Wisemen’s private rooms. Those codes are recorded in your tobozon. However, one of the codes (I can’t remember which) appears out of nowhere in your tobozon when exploring the temple. If you use this code to open the corresponding door, it can allow you to skip some puzzles and lead to a dead-end (that happened to me when I first played the game; I was pretty pissed when I found out). So I suggest you make a note of the temple door codes you’ve actually found in the game, and do not open a door unless you’re sure you’re supposed to be able to.

I hope this helps.

1) In Slammers End, there’s a tunnel…

Luckily I heaven’t visited the slammer area twice, so I couldn’t make the mistake.

2) In the boozook temple, you get codes…

Oddly enough I might have already tripped on that one. Namely, (according to the UHS file) I was supposed to get a digicode for the Word Wiseman’s room from Time Wiseman (who sits in the Council Chamber and talks gibberish) but I didn’t (or at least I haven’t heard it, and that part doesn’t have subtitles*). Still, when I typed the digicode found in UHS hint file (yeah, I’m cheating even the second time around) the Word Wiseman’s pet appeared and gave me the basic syllable. I didn’t check the tobozon thingie, so I can’t tell whether the digicode for the Word Wiseman’s room was already there or not.

*It’s funny, but a few parts of the game don’t have subtitles and some more have French subtitles (which I understand to some extent but nowhere near as well as the English ones). I don’t remember that from the first time I’ve played Woodruff.

So I suggest you make a note of the temple door codes you’ve actually found in the game, and do not open a door unless you’re sure you’re supposed to be able to.

I haven’t made a great progress since opening the door I wasn’t supposed to open, so I’ll load a previously saved game and go on from there. Thanks.

You bet. Thank you so much Kurufinwe.
