first i am sorry for whoever gets irritated with my continuous and intensity of posts, i guess i need a doctor Smile

i wonder if any can provide me whith this infomation Best Selling Adventures Comparing to Best Selling Game Last year (for example).

for instance we all agree the Resonance had made (not a break through) an Adventure that has the core of the real adventuring we witnessed and grown up with, when Adventure games were the best Selling PC Games in the market KQ6,Myst,Monkey Island 2.

the Questing did it sell good (i am claiming for a share here Grin ) i just want to know where adventure Games Stand in the Commercial Matket, Maybe The walking Dead has Made a good Number for Selling Copies (Electronic and Hard).

Or there is no recourse to get these information from ,or maybe it just doesnt matter really nowadays as long as we are the ones funding .but isn’t that how they evaluate Movies Success

Thanks

The Walking Dead sold one million copies in the first two weeks. Those are really good numbers for a downloadable game, regardless of genre. I wouldn’t be surprised if its more than doubled that by now, especially with the current Steam sale which has it marked down and in a package of Telltale games. It’s actually only $15 today which should give it a huge boost.

Many big budget games with a lot of advertising don’t do that well. The biggest games, like Call of Duty and Diablo III can sell a few million copies on the first day, but a million in two weeks is very good. I don’t know much about other adventure games. You don’t generally see accurate numbers unless the publisher releases them.

edit: I’m just now recalling that I believe Telltale said they sold 1 million episodes, so that’s less impressive considering most people bought the entire season which is 5 episodes. Still, 200+ thousand copies in two weeks is very good for a downloadable adventure game.

It’s not even funny. Take into account that your budget for a AAA is probably in the $60m mark, but adventure games are a very small blip on the map.

All the big Numbers goes for the Platform’s Games and when Adventures are Mainly for PC’s then the issue is not with the Genre, the issue is with the Consoles that the new Generation maintains?

It’s a vicious cycle. They won’t put the games on consoles because they don’t sell enough, but thye don’t have access to that larger market.

Myst is still regarded as the 2nd biggest selling PC game of all time, but that was more to do with the introduction of the CD rom rather than the game itself.

The PC market is vitually all digital now which means it doesn’t reflect itself on the number websites.

Walking Dead I hear sold over 1 million copies, but non adventure games.

That number drives me mad, because the way it was announced was horribly disingenuous. What Telltale announced two months ago was that “The Walking Dead video game has sold over one million episodes”, which clearly seems to amalgamate sales of single episodes (only the 1st one at that point) and season passes (counted as 5 episodes). So two months ago, they had sold something between 200,000 and one million copies of the first episode of TWD. (EDIT: what louiedog said)

The numbers you give for adventures, however, seem to be a little underestimated. For instance, the Humble Botanicula Debut Bundle alone sold over 92,000 copies.

Still, the ballpark figure is what it is: a successful adventure game sells a few hundred thousand copies. Which is peanuts. More importantly, this is exactly the same numbers as 20 years ago, which is why big publishers (which, as all publicly-traded companies, only care about growth) couldn’t care less about adventure games.

Adventure games on the Nintendo Ds can sell very well:

Professor Layton and the Curious Village: Global Total as of 07th Jul 2012 (units): 5.01m

The Ace Attorney Series has sold millions of units as well.

The best selling game on the 3DS on launch day was Prof Layton and the Mask of Miracle.

I enjoy playing adventure games on my Alienware M17 r4 and my Nintendo Switch OLED.

Plenty of adventure games sell pretty well, just not all of them through traditional means and of course not compared to juggernauts like Call of Duty, but compared to a lot of other “regular” games not in the AAA biz they do really well. But as with any other genre there’s also more duds than there’s hits with adventures.

Hm, I find it hard to believe that Machinarium sold 600,000 boxed copies. But if it’s true, Amanita has been very successful. Considering the hundreds of thousands they sold through their own site, Steam and GOG.

The figure I quoted was the PC version it sold 2.49 million on the PS3 and 2.26 million on the 360 leaving 0.07m for the PC version.

Those figures are from VGCharts, right? They’re really not very reliable. (By the way, 0.06m equals 60,000, not 600,000 units Innocent )

I did say above that they were estimates. VGCharts isn’t 100% accurate, but unless publishers and developers released accurate figures it’s the best we have (NPD does something similar).

No offense to your original post intended. Indeed, as far as free figures are concerned, informed guesses like VGC’s are the only information to come by. (NPD group use actual retailer data to extrapolate their sales stats. The results are a lot more reliable, but naturally also a lot more expensive…)
