Maybe at the beginning you were fooled into thinking that because it looked and felt like Gabriel Knight it would turn out to be of the same quality?

I, for one, never thought this felt like a GK game. Certainly not GK2 or GK3. So you must mean it was like GK1, and I don’t see that comparison at all. Perhaps you would like to tell the rest of us where you see the equivalency.

This is a game that wears its influences loud and proud, like DIY patches on the back of a well-worn denim jacket. Particularly evident is its infatuation with the first Gabriel Knight game, Sins of the Fathers.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. Sins of the Fathers was a great game. It had all the things that Kathy Rain aspires to, and, for the most part, Kathy Rain does an admirable job of tapping into the things that made Sins of the Fathers so memorable.

If I had to compare it to an old graphic adventure, I’d probably say the first Gabriel Knight

As expected with a game like this trying to evoke the spirits of Gabriel Knights

https://adventuregamers.com/articles/view/30532

everything from its look and feel right down to some specific story beats is culled straight from some of the giants of the time, most notably Jane Jensen’s beloved Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers

https://www.pcinvasion.com/kathy-rain-review/

while the actual game is a lot closer to Gabriel Knight with a brief stop-off in Twin Peaks. And for what it’s worth, while I’m offering up a lot of comparisons, Kathy Rain wears its inspirations pretty heavily on its sleeve. Someone investigating the supernatural who rides a motorbike (Corley Motors, in this case), asks people questions based on what’s in their notebook, and spends quite a lot of time at their grandmother’s house because their grandfather is somehow involved in the mystery? Sounds familiar…

a cross between mid-era LucasArts games and Sierra titles such as Gabriel Knight.

Kathy Rain is a bit of Nancy Drew for adults meets Gabriel Knight for non-hardcore adventure gamers

As a massive fan of Gabriel Knight and this kind of story, Kathy Rain hit the right notes for me.

This game reminded me a lot of Gabriel Knight - Sins of the Fathers, one of the best adventure detective games.

The game is definitely inspired by Gabriel Knight 1, there are many similar design choices, dialogues, motorbikes and many similar locations, from the police station and graveyard to the church and grandmother’s house. I thought it was a fairly good tribute.

Insert the many quotes

Sorry. I don’t disagree with you and people who agree with you.

There are many games that are derivative of other games. Agustn Cordes commented during the Scratches playthrough that Amber was one of many influences.

Did I see a similarity? No. But if Agustin says it was an influence, who am I to argue.

I don’t see the similarity between KR and GK1. You do. I don’t. No need to argue further.

So why did you ask me for evidence in the first place?

You could have saved us both a lot of time if you admitted you weren’t willing to have your mind changed.

Okay, let’s review the chain of events:

1. Rtrooney: “I am right and you’re wrong. Please be a witness to this fact.”
2. Donuts McGee: “Sorry, but you’re really quite wrong. Here’s the evidence.”
3. Rtrooney: “So you refuse to be witness to my righteousness? But I have no argument so I’m going to use the ‘it’s all opinions’ spiel to defend my self-image.”

and in fairness, I won’t forget:
4. Donuts McGee: “I am the righteous one, brother. And I, like you, seek witnesses.”

Rtrooney, I forgive us both.  Heart

You may not see the influence yourself but the point is that Kathy Rain is very clearly influenced by Gabriel Knight.  Again, you might not see it yourself but that doesn’t mean that it’s not there because it is.

The influences are pretty clear imo. You’re an aspiring writer turned amateur detective (journalist rather than novelist), You’re tasked with uncovering a quasi-religious conspiracy with a supernatural element, there’s the side-kick character who does research for you.

There’s even that one puzzle where you take a recording and splice the audio to create an original message. Pretty much the exact same puzzle is in GK 2 and that puzzle was basically the writing on the wall puzzle from GK 1.

The aesthetic of the game isn’t as much of a direct homage as something like Lamplight City, for instance. But the influence is certainly there.

As far as Whispers of a Machine itself, I’m waiting to see something a bit more concrete from it. Not much to go on from the teaser other than some nice looking promotional art.
