I would never call The Blobjob a game. It's actually a ludicrous, amateurish so called "educational" interactive thingy with the purpose of telling kiddies what to do in an emergency when there's a fire or an accident: call 911... oops! wrong number. Should be 112. But all the locations are American! (The idiotic game even has the bloody nerve to tell you "this number is known by everybody") In case the player hadn't noticed: that was a puzzle. And if there's a way to save your progress in the Blobjob, I haven't found it.

More importantly, this "game" warns our innocent young players against alcohol, drugs and last but not least SEX. It features a yucky stomach-turning pic of what may happen to your... eh... body when you have sex with a prostitute. But otherwise playing the cheesy Blobjob was a hilarious experience. Wouldn't have missed it for the world.

A "rare" book may only be rare because an author self-published, and only sold one or two copies. It's "rare" only because nobody bought it.

Ditto for games. Just because nobody bought the game doesn't make it rare. It only makes it a commercial failure.

My definition of "rare" is a game that had some critical acclaim, e.g., FPFP, but is very hard to find with original packaging, documentation, etc.

I tossed my KQ 5.25's in the trash many years ago. Yes, you can buy them on CD, but the very originals, with original packaging, I would think of as reare.

Nah, well, there are games that nearly didn't sell at all, but which you can still easily find years after. For example, Uncle Henry's Playhouse, a repackaging of puzzles from 7th Guest, 11th Hours and Clandestiny. It didn't sell more than 27 units in the holiday season of 1996. A bigger number of copies was produced, of course.
So, it's still rather easy to get the game years later, depite its limited release, just because nobody had any interest in it.

But then there's Ultima: Escape from Mount Drash, a game in the Ultima series developed by former publisher of the games developed by Origin Systems, Sierra.
Sierra apparently never officially released the game, and only like 13 fully existing copies were confirmed by a collector.
The game is rare because the release was apparently stopped at the last second. It was therefore a failure. Still, it's incredibly hard (and expensive!) to get hold of it. So, it's definately rare.

I recently found a Maniac Mansion, ibm, complete game at a yard sale for 2 bucks. The top flap doesn't stay closed but otherwise the box is in great shape. I don't really even know why the top won't stay closed. Maybe it's been opened too many times. The game isn't exactly super rare but it fetches a healthy price and is a great collectable.

Other games I got there was a few non rare games like Return to Zork, Quest for Glory 1,2, Leisure Suit Larry 1 (original release), Robin Hood: Longbow. I also got some non adventures like the Wing Commander 1 and Wolfenstein 3d. Me being an avid collector of older games was in heaven.

it does not have the wonderful music of the original full game.

The original game which needs some tweaking to run on XP is wonderful and a true work of art. Ditto re Rome: Caesar's Will, the trick to running that is to turn Acceration all the way off, then the sound will work fine. I got an original boxed set last year and it is a lovely game. It is expensive tho and hard to find so it is rare. One of the best of the Rome themed games. I saw someone listed The Amazon Queen as rare, it is available for free with the authors permisson on the ScummVM Site the full fully voiced version and it is a lot of fun. You will find a lot of other games that work great on ScummVM btw. As others have posted, i would consider a game "rare" if it is worthy of note AND not easy to find. Increasingly almost all CGI games will fit in this category so take care of your collections.

"Cosmology Of Kyoto" is very very very rare even in Japan.
But once or twice in a year, the game appears in yahoo Auction Japan.

Luckily, I got "Cosmology Of Kyoto" (English/Japanese version) in October 2008 in Yahoo Auction in Japan.
The price is 8000yen.

I don't regret my money.

Hi XXJ. Yes. Only last week I saw that there was one on Yahoo Japan, but it was Japanese version only.

If that's the picture of yours I'm Jealous. I have the same, but Mac only. I have another PC onebut it's just the CD-ROM. It's a beautiful game, with much to learn and enjoy. :-)

Man that trailer looks like some unnerving stuff. There's something about the atmosphere it gives - reminds me of when I played "I have no mouth and must scream", though I suppose the games are worlds apart.

It's a great game, unlike anything else I've played. (But I don't own it.)

It's extremely rare and even if you spotted a legal copy on ebay or somewhere else you'd have to pay a small fortune for it. Too many collectors around...

Do you know if it's the Japanese version or Japanese/English?
I happen to know there are two different releases of the English version. The blue box, which is similar to the one in your Japanese pic. And the very beautiful and very Japanese gold-and-red box.

I stopped being a "collector" some time ago, but if I ever came across the gold-and-red Cosmology box I would not hesitate to buy it.
