Most Spoken Phrases in AGs
I was thinking about doing a poll about it, but then again I would need some 'phrases' to put in the poll. So what do you think are the most spoken phrases in Adventure games? Give some examples and of course, specify which game are you talking about. Anyway right now all I can think of is:
1) 'Hmm... maybe later' (usually spoken when the programmers want the character to do something, but they didn't want to spend time doing useless animations) 2) 'I can't use these two things together' (it has lots of variations, but the point doesn't change: it's a useless thing-ma-bob, hmmmmmmmmm no!, etc.) Thanks Ninth

"That doesn't work!"
"Locked." "Did you get the number of that donkey cart?" (I'm not sure about this one) You're welcome...

"What do you make of this?" is my favourite. It's in any self-respecting adventure.

While playing "Black Mirror" I must have heard that one at least a hundred times:
"May I talk with you?" I was even hearing that sentence in my dreams... |

"Talking to yourself again?"
"Talking to yourself is a sign of madness." The donkey cart one is a favorite of mine. Very clever too. |

What about things we regularly say out loud to an adventure game when playing. My most common are:
"NO, DON'T DO THAT!" "SHUT UP!" and "You stupid <insert character name/species here>!" Katie. |

"I must be going mad!!!" - from "Darkseed 1", "Darkseed 2" and "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" all made by CYBERDREAMS. Can't remember any other phrases right now.

"I can't pick that up."
And if I ever hear that donkey cart phrase again I'll probably snap.

Though not common in general, one of the characters in Jazz and Faust continually said "That's just stupid" when you tried certain things. Somehow, it seemed strangely appropriate.

In my case it's "I can't use the skeleton arm with that", although a bit farther to CMI it became "I ca...I ca....I ca... I can't use the skeleton arm wi... I can.. I can... I can't use the skeleton arm with that."
Or "It's a rubber ducky, helplessly trapped under that rusty old grille." Also, April tended to say "Hello?" quite often. What was most annoying that it was always the same line. I hate it when a speech line is recycled. The worst was in EMI beginning cutscene & in the Pegnose Pete interrogation scene where they had repeated some lines for... an unknown reason. And the mouths of the characters didn't even move. "Tell me about...." is a very common one.

Ninth already said 'locked', and I'd say to concentrate hard on this one. 'It's stuck/closed' or 'I can't open it' must be the most common phrases in the whole videogame universe. I also remember some AG character always asking 'Why should I do that?' and someone else saying 'That would cause a lot of harm' but I can't remember which game it was.
But surely 'I'm not putting my mouth on that' (FT) was one of a kind

How about "No need to go down there", in Syberia.
Or "You are getting tired" in QFG4, although I didn't mind hearing that one, because I loved the narrator's voice.

I find a lot of the time you'll end a conversation with "Never mind" - even if you've been talking to the character for ages, in which case it sounds really out of place. LucasArts were pretty good at steering clear of 'goodbyes' that didn't fit well like that.

I didn't realise they translated adventure games. You mean they actually re-dubbed the whole thing in Italian? Or was it just the subtitles?
(sorry for hijacking this, I'm just curious) |

"Violence is not the answer."
Don't remember which game or gamesss. Always reminded me of that awful butter-wouldn't-melt-in-her-mouth Ricky Lake, who used to say it to the poor guests she'd betrayed in her mean and nasty show. |

Sometimes the dubbing is good, sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's really really bad... But on the whole, I don't resent dubbing in video gamesas much as I do dubbing in movies (which I consider the greatest non violent crime of mankind). I don't why, but the voices always feel less cheesy to me, probably (and paradoxically) because the people doing them aren't professionals, and surely because the lip-synch problem is not an issue in games (even in FMV).

Did you get the number of that donkey cart? BTW, Simon said it in one of the STS games, and then grinned toward the screen, and I thought it was a funny reference (easter egg?)...
