Sumatra: Fate of Yandi is a traditional point and click adventure that tells the story of Yandi, a logging worker who gets caught up in a terrible landslide, leaving him lost and alone deep in the jungle. Join him on his quest to find his best friend and coworker Ramdan, and return home to his beloved partner Adiratna.
Complicating things, the regret of recent arguments with Adiratna loom over him. The desire to make amends will drive him forward as he makes his way through vast expanses of unexplored forest and desolate wasteland, where many dangers and secrets will be revealed…
Will Yandi reunite with his friend Ramdan? Will he make it home to his beloved Adiratna? Will he even make it out alive?

Been looking forward to this. I think the original freeware is perhaps the best C&D game that I’ve played (out of Mudlarks, A Date in the Park, and Football Game). It was short and simplistic, but everything about it just worked without compromise.
Nice to see that it’s getting the full story treatment.
Thanks Peter! I’m glad you enjoyed Pendek
This version will certainly be bigger and hopefully much better!

This looks really cool. I always love exploring forests in adventure games.
I’m interested in playing a game inspired by the legends of Indonesia. It’s a culture that doesn’t get much mainstream coverage. That sounds original and intriguing. I just hope that there won’t be too many actual “survival” elements or sudden deaths à la Sierra (that wouldn’t make it a bad game though, it’s only a matter of taste).
Oh, and I see that you’re the studio behind Mudlarks - I remember enjoying that game, so that makes it even more promising.

Thanks cyfoyjvx There is a lot to explore in the game! The main section of the game is inspired by the QFG1 map

Thanks for your kind words Nicky! Hopefully we are creating something quite unique
The survival elements are not survival elements in the modern sense - just part of the story and puzzles - no deaths!

This is a really excellent game, and for me managed to top several higher-budget retro-styled games this year - which is no small achievement.
What I really liked was that it wasn’t yet another “American gets lost in rainforest” story which we’ve seen so many times before. It’s a real setting with real characters and real world issues to explore, and not just indulging in American desires for travel to exotic locales.
If you have a yearning for the old classics minus the frustration and mazes and random deaths, you will love this game.
Edit: Thought I’d post my review here, since I really think the game needs more exposure.
When I first saw the screenshots for Sumatra: Fate of Yandi, I knew I wanted to play it. I’m a sucker for exploring exotic locales and getting lost in remote rainforests while fending off wildlife and finding ways to stay alive. What I didn’t know is that how affecting this game would be in its depiction of a place like Sumatra and the situation it and its inhabitants face in modern times.
This is something we rarely see in games at all, and I feel we need much more of. Sumatra: Fate of Yandi isn’t just a great adventure game in the mold of the Sierra classics: it brings up issues of illegal logging and environmental devastation, worker exploitation and safety, corruption and monopolization of industry, species conservation, as well as throwing into the mix themes of friendship, work/life balance and love.
There’s also a subtle, bittersweet feel to the game which makes Yandi’s journey a personal one. It contrasts scenes of urban life (via flashbacks) with journey through therainforest. And it’s those flashbacks which present urban life as more inhospitable. With the exception of Yandi’s close ones, it’s a hostile world where both wildlife and people get exploited for gain, unpaid workers are at the mercy of uncaring bosses, and science research companies conduct shady expeditions. Even with Yandi’s encounters with the rare predator (who usually just want to be left alone), the rainforest is a haven in comparison.
While most adventure games I finish I’ve forgotten within a day or two, Sumatra: Fate of Yandi has stayed with me. I think that’s because Sumatra is a real place with real people, and with the amount of research gone into the game the messages it sends are genuine, while not being preachy in the slightest. I hope more people get to play it.
Nice review Luhr28
It really is a wonderful game.
I just bought it. Having lived in nearby Malaysia for a while, I’m interested in discovering the local lores and legends…
havent played… BUT I really love the artwork! which sensed like kinda homage to90s(Lucasarts)but mostly 80s(Sierra) and with a pinch of ... LSL3, rainforest Kingquest4, police quest2 and the amazon queen, 0
Good Luck with its release operation
