IGN - 8.7/10
Game Trailers - 9.0/10
Game Informer - 9/10
TheSixAxis - 8/10
Hardcore Gamer - 4/5
Videogamer - 8/10

It shifts gear throughout the campaign, where each chapter feels like some mission from some oldschool horror game. Condemned, Silenthill, REmake, RE4 etc.

Chapter 12 and 13 i found worst, because they are total RE4 with shooting haunted enemies.

Other wise solid 8.5 with some intense bossfights.

To counter those reviews there has also been

Joystiq - 2.5/5
Escapist - 3/5
Metro - 3/5
Polygon - 6.5
Push Square - 7/10

Currently running at 74 on metacritic.

Main issues seem to be that it is not a reimagining, but more like a highlights reel of his old games. I watched the ginat bomb quick look and it looked just like RE4 including large chainsaw dude.

I might still give it a go at some point.

An adventure game is nothing more than a good story set with engaging puzzles that fit seamlessly in with the story and the characters, and looks and sounds beautiful.

Correction on PS4 its 74 currently, Xbone at 85 on MC.

Way more positive than i thought , considering its pretty hardcore and average deaths
are 95 per campaign.

From Gaf,
In conclusion.. We have 27 Reviews thus far… 22 Reviews scored 8.0 or higher, 1 review 7.0, and 4 reviews in the 6’s.
82.1 AVERAGE BASED ON 27 REVIEWS FOR “THE EVIL WITHIN”.

Great 1st chapter. Like RE4 no hand-holding through a tutorial 5 minutes into the game, here is a big dude with a chainsaw - survive!
Love the creepy gory dark atmosphere.

Finished, 18 hrs.

Now to replay some chapters and bossfights with new unlocked weapons.

Final verdict still 8.5, some issues cannot be ignored. THey undersused some great Haunted enemies and overused weapon based ones.

Keeper, Laura, Quell = Classic Mikami style bosses.

Wow, Tango did great job,IdTech5 is disaster as Carmack bad swansong.

I hope Bethesda don’t force it down Arkane’s throat for Dishonored2.

DooM is still Tech6.

Just sit back and marvel at this amazing skill, in akumu mode you get killed by single hit from enemy. So what follows is hairpulling sadist experience.

Ouch That has to be the lowest score i’ve seen for this game which has a pretty decent high 70’s score on Metacritic.

Took turns playing with my gf and we finished it in 24h (we took our time though)
I’ve played on ps4 and I gotta say that there’s definitely some really cool and very pretty scenes (and a few real nail-biting moments. Goddamn Laura…) and a lot of it feels very Mikami (if that makes any sense).
Some of the environments and storytelling bits are really out there and the game often flirts with awesomeness but when all is said and done I couldn’t help but feeling a little robbed by the story…

Obviously it’s not a game you want to play for its complex story but it was ludicrous and nonsensical at best and most of the clues and leads they drop throughout the game are pretty much left unsolved and the questions unanswered.
I usually like to have to ask myself questions after a game/movie and it generally feels good to have to deduce things by yourself but here, it really feels like they stitched things together and hoped it would work.

Well regardless, I had a lot of fun playing through, it’s a cool game, a great experience and I’m happy to see it’s doing well sales-wise, we need more games like that Smile

Not that great. even Thief beat those sales.

Just over a million copies is pretty dreadful.

LOL you again, with another kneejerk reaction.

Thief is NOT NEW IP. And Japanese Dev cost are not same as Thief AAA Dev which was setting upto follow same DX HR success.

Its just 4 weeks for new IP, thats what Sony new exclusives do, and Wolfenstein didn’t.
With Alien, Mordor as competition, thats alot.

Moreover its Survival horror, hard game , a niche title, with bad reviews because
your ideal journos were unable to beat it on akumu lol.

I am sure it will be good enough to secure more money(and freedom) for Mikami’s next project.

Thats all that matters.

Have holistic view in life, it will help you.

@dkm

There is DLC coming with Kidman’s story, which will fill the loopholes, but i get your
point, the game was meant to be madman random rollercoaster ride.

Question is was it leslie’ or ruvik’s mind??? Grin

Talking about Laura her last encounter on akumu mode is nightmare, her theme
(again made my Masafumi Takada) always make me panic.

Yeah, I also think those numbers are pretty good for the time being! I mean survival horror isn’t exactly as popular as FPSes nowadays and I see this game as a long time seller too. It’s probably one of the top-list games for people thinking of buying one of the new consoles. I, for one, am glad to see a game like that reaching a million, gives me a bit of hope!

the game was meant to be madman random rollercoaster ride.

Yeah, I took it like that but I think it wouldn’t have hurt with a little more coherence. Still loved playing it though and it’s been a while since I spent +20h on a game, that itself says something Smile

That’s partly my issue with it, there’s not enough in here to really give us food for thoughts! There are so many unanswered questions. My guess is that it was indeed Ruvik’s mind trying to use Leslie’s to escape to the “real” world. Which I guess he somehow succeeded on in the end scene as you see Leslie slowly walk away.
But what do I know? Was Sebastian actually hooked up to the machine even before the game started? Is he still hooked up in the end? (he has a headache in the last cutscene).

Hah well, can’t wait for the DLC, hope it fills in some of the blanks Smile

NPD results IN, EW is a Success!

Beating mordor, Fifa, Destiny etc.

Alien is not even in top 10.

The Evil Within was the highest-selling first month of sales for new survival horror IP,

New enemy , new areas, more concentrated around horror chapters of original game, like chapter 11.
And hopefully some closure to cliffhangers.
