Shortbus - Just strange. Less sex, better actors and a better plot bext time?
The Devil Wears Prada - It was fun. Casino Royale - I thought James Bond movies were crap so I was pleasantly surprised. Amelie - Made me want to prepare creme brule. I loved the surrealism and could sort of identify with Amelie. I've only recently started to watch - and enjoy - Hollywood films more. Especially action films. Perhaps I'm getting old?

Visually stunning, but disappointing in so many ways. Such a pity.

Princess Mononoke (English Lang.)
Just Wow! This is seriously one of the best, if not the best movie I've ever seen. I just knew I'd like it after the first few minutes. I've been a bit hesitant to it earlier, because I thought it was just a lot of war, but this was just great. I loved the characters, I loved the plot, and when it was finished I just sat there, looking at the screen, being completely overwhelmed. I'm definitively going to buy this and see the original version! It even surpassed Nausicaä, which I thought was the best pro-environment movie ever. (I know there's a lot of japanese mythology in P.Mononoke which I missed because of the english voice-overs among other things, and that's one of the reasons I have to get hold of the original version.)

Both of these were great. We have not been able to find an original language version of Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away here, but we did watch Nausicaa in Japanese.
Totoro and Kiki's delivery Service are also great, but both aimed at younger viewers. Studio Gibli is magic. I am eager to see what they have done with Tales from Earthsea.

By the way, which other anime movies should I see?
I've seen: Loved: Princess Mononoke Nusicaä Spirited away howl's moving castle Liked: Kik's delivery service (it was a sweet little film, but not so immensely as the others) Blood: The last Vampire (saw this in an anime club, was good, but a bit scary) Voices of a distant star (also seen in the anime club and also a good movie, but very sad..) I'm thinking of seeing Ghost in the Shell, and some other Miyazaki films..

Definitely watch Ghost in the Shell, the first movie. Every other GitS is between mediocre and horrible (on my rating scale, at least), so don't bother.
I would also recommend Whisper of the Heart, a modern fairy tale in suburban Tokyo. Beautiful, beautiful movie, although somewhat simple. Now and Then, Here and There is a must-see. Also a fairy-tale (notice a pattern here?), but a lot darker, and very touching. Also, its art directing is my favourite amongst all animated series I've seen so far. Finally, Cowboy Bebop. Simply the best soundtrack, like, ever. Jazz and cool bounty hunters? Hell yeah. |

I didn't think much of Ghost in the Shell, but I loved the sequel so I suggest you watch both.
Didn't like Voices of a Distant Star either, too cheesy for me, but it certainly looked nice. Anyway, apart from what kuze said, I think Only Yesterday, Grave of the Fireflies, Akira, Wings of Honneamise and Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade would be obvious choices. You might also want to check out The Cat Returns, My Neighbors the Yamadas, El Hazard - The Magnificent World, Spriggan, Steamboy and Metropolis. My highest recommendations go to Perfect Blue (other Satoshi Kon's movies are also worth checking out) and FLCL, even though FLCL is not a movie, but a six part series.

I watched that myself, not too long ago myself. While it didn't have as much effect on me as "Howl's Moving Castle", it was very touching nonetheless. -

When it comes to anime, there is one film that has to get recommended before anything else, and that's Grave of the Fireflies. Nothing else touches it.

I've heard of it, and it looks wonderful, but I have yet to find a DVD (I think they haven't published it here yet. We only recently got "Castle in the Sky" in the cinema!) -

You mean Laputa ???
I had a 2 hrs headache for synching subtitles for that... but I was indebted to my bro so I couldn't drop it. I can send you the English subs, if your Japanese is not so good either (provided you've got the same version of the cartoon).

I've watched a pile of Jason Statham movies lately, his my new hero.
I especially loved Transporter and Crank, the unreal action of Crank was so funny. Transporter 2 wasn't as good as the first one was, but that is the case often with sequels.

For some reason I misread that as John Stamos. You have to admit that would've been way cooler.

Heheh! I think I've never watched a John Stamos movie before, but I might be lying...
I'm going to check this from IMDB. EDIT: Indeed, I didn't recognize even one movie from Stamos' very colorful career.
