Default Edna & Harvey performance issues

just started playing it today. Gotta say, it takes a LONG time for the game to load up considering how low tech it is. also the game froze for me when saving (or at least it takes long enough for me to give up and close the process.)
any way to play this windowed instead of full-screen??

Hi Mataku,

I don't know what OS you're using. For me the game worked fine under an XP virtual machine (on a MacBook).

Anyway, this is from the developer's site:

http://forum.daedalic.de/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=767

Hope this helps. Cheers, Dan

The eurogamer review does point out that the game has a ton of bugs/technical problems.. which is the only thing holding me back from buying it.

Hello Darth Maul,

the Eurogamers' review doesn't tell us about the system that was used either. But it gives us tons of spoilers.

Like I said: XP should be fine.

I am using XP. but second time i started the game it was a bit faster so at least there's that. The programming of the game IS somewhat of a mess. all the animation in the game is done in png files you can find in the game's directory (and can probably edit if you wish), also ALL the sound files are in one folder, making it a folder with no less than 25,000 files.

I played on XP. Saving took longer than I expected. I also encountered a couple of crash bugs and one weird glitch of no voice lines playing or subtitles displaying, regardless of settings. It resolved itself upon restart.

Overall, it was stable enough. I've had worse technical experiences. I do wish the saving had been a little faster and also that the subtitles didn't turn themselves back on every time I restarted the game (I prefer to play with them off).

There were similar performance issues in The Whispered World, which is from the same developer. My best guess is that these problems are related to the engine Daedelic uses.

It was crashing as soon as the intro finishes on both of my PCs. I managed to fix it on my desktop just by updating its graphics and audio drivers. I haven't had any success on my laptop as yet though.

Sorry to hear that. Can't help you, I'm a technical nitwit. Have you tried contacting the Daedalic people?

I'm in a similar situation as Fien - I don't really know anything about troubleshooting but my best guess is that you should simply try it in XP-compatibility mode (if you're not playing under XP anyway).

Sometimes easy solutions do work

Cheers, Dan.

I've read somewhere that updating java fixes the closing on start problem. might want to try that.

I also have a laptop (MSI ER710x-052EU) and E&H couldn't even start: for a second a game logo would flash and then it would crash (hey, it rhymes! )

Yes, I have XP (didn't want to install Vista when I bought the PC, and have no need for Win 7 now).

You bet. Most of the time I managed to solve the computer-related problems with easy solutions .

And that was the solution: I updated Java from 6.11 to 6.24 (they say it's the latest update), and - bam! - now I can play Edna & Harvey!
