Using Wine to play AGS games - problem with 16-bit colors

I'm trying to play some AGS-games (1213 in fact) with 16-bit colours on my Mac using Wine, but I'm unable to get this to work, because AGS tells me that it can't switch the resolution to 16-bit colors. Does anybody know of a workaround? I tried searching all over the web and so far haven't found anything.

(And please don't say "use Windows/Linux" ;D)

I've now discovered that I should now edit xorg.conf, which a Mac system doesn't seem have, not even with the X11 tools installed. If anybody has any pointers, I'd really appreciate them - but it's not looking too good. Better just get my broken SuperDrive replaced and install XP on its own partition.

My old Windows-box died conveniently, too, just when I was looking forward to some gaming!

(The Last Express also requires 16 bit colors).
