I have (legitimately) installed Gabriel Knight 2 on my computer, using the patch that allows the game to run without the cds. So I didn't think it important to bring the game along with me to college.

For some reason, it has started acting strangely, only showing two buttons and there's no music in the background. I can't start a new game, and can only reload.

Is there a way to fix this without having to wait till I go home from college? (Collector advised me to post this thread, so I'm assuming there's a way to fix it without the cds?)

Was this with the Windows installer or the DOSBox installer? Post the contents of the game's config file, RESOURCE.CFG or RESOURCE.WIN. Also, post the contents in the base of the game's folder.

I believe I used the DosBox installer you linked to on the Sierra site. I have the resource.win file, but my comptuer won't recognize how to open it. Here is a screenshot of what the inside of the GK2 main folder, which is located within the Program Files/Sierra. I'm sorry the screen is so little. If it's too much of a hassle, don't worry about it. I can be patient and wait till I go home...

That is the Windows version. If you double click on the RESOURCE.WIN, Windows will ask you what you want to open it with. Choose Notepad.

Look in the patches folder for 11.HEP, 11.SCR, 34.hep and 34.scr
If they are there, try removing ;C: \PROGRA~1\SIERRA\GK2WIN from the end of the patchDir line, i.e. so it is just:

patchDir=C: \PROGRA~1\SIERRA\GK2WIN\PATCHES

I don't see a place to put that in. I opened the HEP files with notepad, and it has a lot of gibberish and has .vmd not found!

I think the two .scr-s are there, although they say they are Screen savers. Man, I think my copy is really messed up...

Sorry, I mean to edit the RESOURCE.WIN. Those are the files that the game needs to start without the problem that you are having. If those files are in the Patches directory, the game might not find them with the ;C: \PROGRA~1\SIERRA\GK2WIN in the patchDir= line of the RESOURCE.WIN

I edited what you told me to in the Resource.win file, but the same problem is still there. No opening music, and only restore and quit.

Unzip this into the Patches directory.

When I try to unzip it or open it, it says it is corrupted. It says there are no files to extract...

I just downloaded it and the zip is OK. Try redownloading it.

I downloaded it on another computer, and put them into the patches folder. It worked!! Thank you so much Collector, you've been an awesome help. Seriously, thanks for helping me, and sorry for being such a bother.

I am not sure why there seems to be problems with that zip, but I tried the download on a couple of different computers with success. At least Fantasysci5 was able to unzip it. I'll put the files up on my site in case there is anyone else having problems with downloading it from this thread. I'll link to it here after I get it up.
