Default Hunt for the Puppeteer problem: laggy videos

I've recently started playing Art of Murder: Hunt for the Puppeteer, and I'm very impressed. It's exactly the kind of adventure game I prefer: illustrated realism, 3rd person.

But I noticed something odd right away. Every time a cutscene video plays (and a good feature of the game is that there are very many such videos), it lags badly, and the sound stutters. Honestly, I can't make heads or tails of it.
As usual, first thing I did was to update all video and audio drivers. It's particularly puzzling because my computer isn't exaclty an old dishwasher:

Win XP
Core 2 Quad processor
4 Gigs RAM
GeForce 8800 GTS 512

Considering Far Cry 2 (an example of a heavily taxing game, not of a good game ) runs smoothly, last thing I expected was a performance problem with an adventure game, since, as visually appealing and wonderfully drawn as they may be, its 2D prerendered backgrounds are not exaclty taxing in terms of computational power!

Any insights?
