7th Guest - Microscope Puzzle question

I'm replaying 7th Guest on DosBox and am at the infamous Microscope puzzle. I have completed every other puzzle up to this point but can't get to the attic door on the 2nd floor. I read that you don't have to beat the Microscope puzzle to beat the game... does that mean I just have to solve it via the library book in order to continue? Will that mess up any of the game's ending for me?

I recently completed the game using the book to solve the Microscope Puzzle. The ending presented was as I recalled it from playing it years ago (when I successfully beat the Microscope Puzzle after many hours of play. I've got less patient over the years)

I believe using the book only affects you if you use it repeatedly.
