Gabriel Knight Fatal Error
Hi there - I came here looking for any help people may be able to give regarding Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
I'm currently running it off DOSBOX and got it working perfectly - until Day 7 that is! Right after Grace enters the bookstore, I'm getting an error: Fatal error cannot find resource 228.snd It crashes the game and I can't go on. I've tried installing patches but I'm not sure if they're actually working - I did notice on the map screen that the graphics were updated after I copied over some patches. Any help would be MUCH appreciated, I simply adore this game! ps. Otherwise if anyone has a save file from the beginning of Day seven - maybe that can work? |

It sounds like there is a missing or corrupted game file. You could try recopying the game from the CD or you could try my GK1 DOSBox installer.

Thanks for your help - I actually already tried copying the files again from the cd (first just the 228.snd file, then the entire patch folder) but still no dice. I can't actually remember if I used your DOSBOX installer when I first tried to run the game (my brother was helping me out with it), but wouldn't that cause my saved files to be overwritten?
I'm actually frustrated to the point where I'd like to just try out a save file from the beginning-ish of day 7 and see if that works. I've seen a list of save files somewhere else and tried them, but I think it only works with the Mysteries two-pack, I just have the GK1. |

Just save the GKSG.CAT and all GKSG.* files from your current install. Drop them in the new installed folder. You will need your CD to install, but you will be able to play it without the CD.

Just tried what you suggested, copied over my save files, which worked - used the DosBox installer and it was able to run the game. However it ran it very slowly, (even when I turned the speed up) and unfortunately I'm still getting the 228.snd error.

Look on you CD for a file named version. Open it in Notepad and report what version.

It looks like it's 01.100.000?

That is the version that I used to develop the installer. Can you post the save games so that I can take a look?

I don't know if this is the installer that Collector is talking about, but I used the installer found on this site http://vogons.zetafleet.com/gkpatches/ and I didn't have any problems at all. Doesn't seem to use dosbox at all, it installs it in Windows XP.

I actually just tried the XP installer yesterday as well, and the game worked - however it would not recognize my saved files (I'm guessing the Windows version would save differently than the DOS version?). However if you have a saved file from around Day 7-ish I might be able to try that with the XP installation? Mostly I just don't want to play the entire game from Day one again without knowing whether I'm going to get the same bug on day seven!
