Okay. I wanted to solve this without a walkthrough, and I thought I might be able to do it after I got through the infamous turtle puzzle.

But I am stuck now. I opened three of the doors in the Nexus and activated all the railways (crystal puzzle).
Now I have the feeling that I have to catch the rat-something. Maybe because it has the plate? Or I need it for the bats??

Whatever, I put the bolt into place and hung the metal bar on it. I don't why I had to do that, but okay.
Now, I realize that I have to catch the mouse-rat-whatever with the ribcage.
But, how!? Hint?

I had been hoping someone with more recent experience of the game could help. I've reconstructed hints from a help file (not being able to remember well enough myself) If any of this doesn't make sense then post again and I'll try to clarify if I can.

You have to construct a complete trap for the rat thing (it is because you need the plate)

Items required

Spoiler:
Large pole, wooden dowel, rib cage, rod

Bit it sounds like you've done.

Spoiler:
Attach pole to wheel with dowel

Further bits to do

Spoiler:
hang ribcage from hook

Spoiler:
prop up ribcage with rod

How to use the trap

Spoiler:
Alas, there is no bait anywhere.

You'll have to chase it into the trap

The above is easier said than done. Here is a recommended strategy (from the help file).

"I found that it was easiest to chase the rat down from one (and only one) of the holes and then walk around the screen and sneak up behind the rat. If you're having trouble getting the rat to run underneath the cage, you might want to try looking into another hole until the rat appears there."

Thanks for the help!
I had to stand between the wheels to catch this animal.
Even after I solved the puzzle I have no idea why I had to solve it this way. I could imagine some much simpler solutions!

Glad you've got past it.

Fancy thinking you could go for a simpler solution in an adventure game though.
