Buying laptop - will Adventure games run?
Okey, Im buying soon laptop called Samsung NPR25 (in local store).
So my favourite genre is adventure. And I would want to know if there will be problems with running adventure games on this laptop. (especially i mean video card compatibility, and Operating system, which can be changed later anyways) Here are this laptop's technical information: Intel Core 2 Duo (Centrino) Mobile processor T5500; 14,1'' LCD WXGA 1280×800 pixels; 1 GB RAM; 120 GB HDD; Super Multi DL DVD burner/writer Nvidia Geforce Go 7300 graphics card (128 MB) ; memory card reader; WiFi; Bluetooth; Vista Home Premium op.system I know newer/games with good graphics might not run (I mean Dreamfall,Farenheit, maybe last Myst). But tell me more about this laptop, and warn me against something, if there is anything. MadTricks.

Honestly, I think that the specs ought to be fine. I have an HP Pavilion laptop with Windows XP, 128 MB RAM, 80 GB hard drive and most importantly, my video card is a dedicated 128 MB Radeon Mobility X600. I don't know how that compares to your video card (I'm never good at that) but Dreamfall and Myst IV ran just fine for me. I don't own Fahrenheit.
I think the biggest headaches you may encounter will have to do with Vista. |

A friend of mine has a laptop running Vista with only 1 Gb RAM, and even for office tasks things are much slower than they should. So you might consider upgrading that.

If you got WinXP with that machine you'd probably have no troubles, but anything might happen with Vista. I suggest you test a similar machine somewhere and try how it works for you.

Something to consider is that GameTap will not allow you to install it on a laptop since they generally have built in video. It requires a dedicated video card. Beats me why because many of their games will easily run on laptops. So if you're playing Sam and Max Season 2 when it comes out or Myst Live, which I am, you'll be disappointed and out of luck.
I would second the recommendation to get XP on it as it speeded up my new laptop quite a bit. Vista was a resource hog. Last edited by Dara100; 09-17-2007 at 11:38 AM. |

GameTap shouldnt be a problem, since I live outside US/Canada , plus there is no way GameTap coming to my country.
And Geforce 7300 should be independant video card, its not integrated to motherboard. I think...

Just an FYI: when I got into AGs a few years ago, it was all on a laptop (WinXP) and I had few troubles. I no longer do that, but I was intrigued by a comrade at work who brought his game to work each day to play during lunch--good idea (though his lunches started to get long).

Not true. I have always run GameTap on clearance laptops with integrated video cards and have never had a problem.

The only real issue I see for older Adventure games is not laptop related by OS related. Be ready to get DOSBOX (a free DOS emulator) and to mess with some other compatibility issues for Windows games in particular. It is a pain but you should be able to get all the older games running with either DOSBOX or some serious tinkering.

I found now even better computer for considerable price.
But it has widescreen display. I have noticed that many adventures don't have resolution setting. Am I going to occur some problems between wide display and games designed for "regular" monitors?

What you will get is usually a squashed image. The computer will automatically stretch the picture out to the appropriate length. It is not a problem as far as playing but if you are playing Tex Murphy or something like that then Tanya Roberts may look like she needs to go on a diet.

(and, obviously, some adventures do support widescreen resolutions, though not many for the moment)

try and get a friend at university to get a hsbc student accound to get 40% off dell laptops
also look at dell anyway there stronger and last longer. another point is to look at the games you want to play if ur using it for school then at mo fine but be sure to get a 9 cell battery for a longer battery life. if you want to play recentish games maybe you shoould look into a better graphics card. A little advice dont try to install the sims 2 with all expansion packs. if you want a cheaper option than a dell try the IBM equivlent or the toshiba. upgrade to vista in about a year or 2.

I Just bought a Toshiba Equium A200, Specs:
Processor type : Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor T2080 clock speed : 1.73 GHz Front Side Bus : 533 MHz 2nd level cache : 1 MB System Mem: standard : 2,048 (1,024 + 1,024) MB Hard disk capacity : 160 GB Graphics adaptor: manufacturer : Intel® type : Intel® GMA 950 memory : up to 256 MB total available graphics memory with 2 GB system memory memory type : shared You know what? Heres the site. xD http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.c...hibaShop=false Anyway, mine runs on Vista as well, and Im already running into problems. I installed Hoyle, and it didnt even come up every time I clicked "Play" on its launcher. I can play Broken Sword 2 but the graphics are glitchy and some parts are in screwed up colours.. I think Im going to have a problem with gaming.. which isnt fair being the store guy said it wouldnt have a problem running "Point and clicks" unless he's a complete nonce and thought I meant like solitare.

My husband recently got a laptop with Vista, and it seems to be almost random which of our older programs will or won't run. Vista is also immensely resource-hungry, so you won't get the raw power you might expect from the hardware stats.
I would go along with the others who recommend XP, if you can get it. I personally don't see a lot of difference in use between Vista and XP, except that Vista tries so hard to be user-friendly that it gets annoying. Vista is totally integrated with the internet, which can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your point of view.
