Hi there

I dug out my Broken Sword (1)(UK) because I fancied playing it again. I got it installed okay, but when I come to play it. A message similar to this comes up all the time ::::

Incorret CD......Put in the correct CD (1) and press any key.

I DO have the correct CD in the drive, but I just get the same message over and over, and the game won't start.

Please help, as I want to play the game again

Thanks

Meg, Scotland, UK

I am running Windows XP SP2, Athalon 64, Navida GeForce FX 5200. There are no marks or scratches on the CD's. Also using the compatibility option has no effect.

Not that. Illegal activities are not a valid suggestion on these forums.

I was just kidding. Besides, if he actually bought it and now it doesn't work, would it be illegal to download the game he bought?

Note the lines starting with a drive letter (in this case D:\). The letter should be the CD-ROM drive you are using to play the game (usually D:, E: or F:, but can easily be something else). To find out what drive letter your CD device has, open up My Computer. If the drive in Sword.inf does not correspond to the drive you are using, then change it. For example, if your CD device is E:, then Sword.inf should look like this: smackshi\
smackshi\
E:\speech\
E:\speech\
E:\music\
E:\music\
clusters\
clusters\
saves\
English
That might help you, clydevalley.

How are you running it. There are three ways: straight, from windows or DOS; via DOSBox; and, via ScummVM. All three worked for me, specially straight and ScummVM. I recommend the latter if you have trouble with the game: just copy the entire CD contents into some directory on your hard drive. There's a file that should not be overwritten (has the same name on both CDs), but ScummVM explains what to do nicely.

Ok heres a method of getting the game working if the easier method from dave baldwin doesn't work; it's a little involved but it should work:
  1. Create a folder called "sword" somewhere on your computer
  2. Put Broken Sword CD1 in your CD drive and
    • copy all the .CLU files from the "CLUSTERS" directory into your "sword" directory
    • copy the SPEECH folder from the CD to your "sword" directory on your hard drive and rename the file "speech.clu" to "speech1.clu"
    • copy the MUSIC folder from the CD to your "sword" directory on your hard
    • copy "swordres.rif" to your "sword" directory on your hard
  3. Put Broken Sword CD2 in your CD drive and:
    • copy all the .CLU files from the "CLUSTERS" directory into your "sword" directory
    • copy the SPEECH folder from the CD to your hard drive and rename the new "speech.clu" to "speech2.clu"
    • copy the MUSIC folder from the CD to your hard drive
  4. Go to ScummVM.org and download ScummVM 0.9.1 "Windows Installer" (near the top of the list) and Broken Sword 1 Cutscene Pack (English) (Sword1_Cutscenes.zip) to your computer.
  5. Open the "Sword1_Cutscenes.zip" file you downloaded and extract the files into your "sword" folder. There should now be a folder called "video" which contains lots of .ogg, .pal and .mp2 files.
  6. You should now have in your "sword" folder:
    • All the .clu files from CLUSTERS folders on CD 1 and 2
    • "swordres.rif"
    • "music" folder
    • "speech" folder (containing speech1.clu and speech2.clu)
    • "video" folder containing all the files from inside "Sword1_Cutscenes.zip"
  7. Install ScummVM 0.9.1 by running the Windows Installer file you downloaded (scummvm-0.9.1-win32.exe) and following the on screen instructions
  8. Run ScummVM, click on "Add Game..." then find the "sword" folder you created using the little file browser that pops up. When you find the directory enter it and press "Choose" and it should find Broken Sword. Select Broken Sword from the list and click on "Options" to set any options you'd like (such as full screen) or just press Start to play the game.

Broken Sword should run with no problems in XP, exactly as you remember it.

I got the same problem... the install was ok but the program told me to insert the right cd.
So I get ScummVM. Another world... awesome!
