Mac users: I know a way of running most older PC games, on a new computer!
 

it is quite expensive, but i myself have done it, and its well worth the money.

step 1. Buy an apple imac, or a mac mini if you prefer.

step 2. buy a program called Paralells desktop (it allows you to install windows on a mac, and let you run it in a window)

step 3. install Windows 98 or windows 95 on said computer

step 4. install older game on windows 98, 95 etc

enjoy!

the only thing is, if your game runs on floppy disks, you cant really do it, unless you can buy a USB floppy drive nowadays (none of my games are on floppys, except gobliiins 3)

like i said its expensive (at least £400) but windows runs perfectly, and is very fast.

Why buy a mac when they will all run on a pc with win95/98?

Surely utilising an old PC for this purpose or setting up a dual boot pc is easier?

However you can do a dual boot Win XP / Windows 98 and have a similar outcome without splashing the dosh on a new Mac.

Just think of all the adventure games and beer you can buy for 400 pounds!!!

oh yes, i totally agree on buying an older computer to do this, i myself did this for a number of years, but my fool of a dad decided to actually THROW AWAY my old computer when i was away in london for a weekend.

i already owned an imac, so the only option was to spend £70 on paralells.

its just that i think its an ideal thing to do, if you dont want to pay out for an older computer, save the clutter of having 2 computers if you know what i mean.

The way you phrased it originally:
...it reads as an advice to buy iMac specifically to be able to play old games. Which is anything but well worth the money. If somebody already owns an Apple computer anyway, like you did, it's an entirely different thing altogether.

Haven't you ever heard the word Virtual PC or DosBox ?

Win98 doesn't like my new PC :-( it just keeps crashing when it detects my hardware, and the drivers I got for my motherboard only works on Win2000 and WinXP. But emulation makes practically all old games work. The only problem is sometimes the problem of speed... sometimes the games run very fast or won't start because it needs some special functions dosbox doesn't have. VDMSound works also very well on quite many games. The hardest games to get started are those made for late DOS or early Windows.

Especially games made between Windows 95 and 98 can be a pain in the bum. Because they sometimes use own unsupported features in Windows, or has so much extensions in DOS that they are hard to emulate. It's been a while since I've tried getting Kings Quest: Mask of Eternity to work on Windows XP, but last time I tried there were a lot of bugs I got later in the game. Apparently it uses some features that is very hard to emulate.

But sure, it's easier to just buy an old PC and play games on that one if that's a big problem. It's not hard to get a hold of somebody who has an old PC sitting around, and who are willing to part with it for less than 50 bucks.
