Voyage - taking items from the laboratory

I'm stuck in Voyage, and rather than spoiling this pretty nonlinear game with online hints or walkthroughs, I'd like to ask you guys for a subtle nudge in the right direction. Thanks in advance. :)

My most immediate challenge seems to be distracting/befriending the Selenite in the laboratory to be able to take stuff from there. I suspected this involves adding something to the food prepared in the kitchen, but if so, I have no idea what.

You're on the right track. IIRC there are two different things you could add to get the desired effect.

Have you been feeding your character these foods at all? The effects they have on him are pretty similar to effects they have on the Selenites. Think about which of the foods put him in a state that would make him easily distracted. :D

 Thanks, fov - you are almost as lovely as this lovely game (or was it the other way round? I forget :P ). I thought I had tried all the different foods, but, apparently, I hadn't.

I'm almost finishing the game now, I think. Is there any substitute for the broken can opener, or are all canned supplies from Earth red herrings (I don't think I'll be needing them, but I'm curious)?

EDIT: Never mind. I figured it out. :)
