I hope I've done what you said right. It says this in the DW file that I created.

Directory of CDW\.
. <DIR> 12-11-2005 11:55
.. <DIR> 11-11-2005 23:09
DISCWLD <DIR> 11-11-2005 23:08
BLAH TXT 0 12-11-2005 11:55
DISC BAT 147 23-02-1995 22:58
DWU EXE 52,656 23-02-1995 22:23
3 File(s) 52,803 Bytes.
3 Dir(s) 110,540,800 Bytes free.

I'm not sure, would it have been better to have made the 'blah' file in the DRIVERS file?

Where is this folder? You've got C:\DW\, under which there is C:\DW\DISCWLD\. Is the DRIVERS folder under that? Anyway, can you do the dir thing again in C:\DW\DISCWLD\? And in DRIVERS too, while you're at it?
(though, before that, you may try launching setsound from C:\DW\DISCWLD; maybe it's just sitting there).

If you have the time to wait, the people at SCUMMVM are working on interpreting the engine. So in a while you'll be able to use scummvm to play it.

Okay, sorry I haven't replied recently, college coursework calls. Here's the rest of the files list.

When going into file DW, the files are...

Silly, silly, silly me...

Well, actually, no: silly, silly, silly Discworld developpers.

They didn't include proper sound devices management in the original version: what you need is version 1.04, with the use of this patch.

Here's what you'll do. Move the contents of all your \DW\DISCWLD\ directly into your \DW folder, that'll make things easier. You can also delete the whole DRIVERS subfolder. Then uncompress the patch in your \DW\ folder (which is where now all the game files are) and run disc104.exe (don't worry about the update.bat thing).
Then you'll be able to run setsound and all that, as I explained earlier.

Hopefully, that should be it... finally.

I can't seem to find a link to download the patch. And I can't find the patch on any other sites. It says something about them rebuilding the site. Does this mean that they've stopped patch downloads temporarily?

Just follow the link I gave and click on one of the mirrors. I've just tried it again, and it works.

I really don't know what to tell you... Try again, maybe it was just an intermittent problem with their server? It is still working fine for me (with the 2nd and 3rd mirror).

(don't use any sort of dowload manager; I think their server doesn't accept that ; just download it with your browser)

If it still doesn't work, send me your email address by PM and I'll send the file to you.

Okay I managed to get the file somewhere else. I then dumped the dw104 file into the subfolder, opened it with setsound and let it do its magic.

And is it me or is the music in the pc version different to the psx version?

Oh and, excuse me if you've already explained how but how do I fix the save problem (it won't remember my save games)?

Oh, and, I'm really thankful for so far ^^

And is it me or is the music in the pc version different to the psx version?
I wouldn't know: I've never played the PSX version. What do you mean by different, anyway? Different tunes or different orchestrations? If it's the latter, it's normal: the PC version uses General MIDI for music (at least, if you've configured it as I've advised you to), which is something that the PSX doesn't have, and the exact sound of which depends heavily on the sound card you use.

Oh and, excuse me if you've already explained how but how do I fix the save problem (it won't remember my save games)?
me

I thought making the folder writeable would be enough to get the saves to work, but obviously it's not that... I should have checked, which I now have. OK, in DOSBox, go to your \DW\ folder (which is where now all your game files should be, right? Go to \DW\DISCWLD\ instead if you didn't move them), and type:
Code:
md save
And then launch the game normally and you should now be able to save.

Nope. Dosbox accepts md save and creates a save folder but when I save it doesn't appear in the load screen or in the save folder.

Does DOSBox say anything (in the DOSBox console) when you try to save, such as Warning: file creation failed: c:\DW\SAVE\SG.1 (which is what I get if the SAVE subfolder doesn't exist)?

I know there's a better way to do that (and store the savegames where the game wants you to), but it's high time the damn thing started working, so let's forget about proper ways.

So, we'll just create the save folder wherever the game wants it to be. So, in DOSBox, where you're under C:\ (not C:\DW\):

Code:
md DISCWLD.CD
cd DISCWLD.CD
md SAVE
And the launch the game normally.

It shouldn't have been so hard to get this game to work normally, but, well, I dunno, I have very fuzzy memories of how I first got it to work, and the fact that it doesn't have any kind of proper installer certainly doesn't help.

I'm not going to say 'and that should be it', as I've already said it prematurely far too many times; I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

YES! It worked (has a heart attack).

Okay, so I've done that and the last thing, how do I change the frame size of dosbox automatically (my pc monitor doesn't support this game full size, even though DW2 works fine in full screen)?

I tried looking on the read me file and on the dosbox forum but nothing on this topic.

Hopefully this should be the last question.

I'm not very knowledgeable about the DOSBox graphic modes; I found something that worked for me, but this all depends on both your video card (ATIs and nVidias behave slightly differently) and your monitor.

My advice is that you just experiment for yourself with the various options. Open your dosbox.conf, and try playing with the options in the [sdl] and [render] sections. There are explanations inside the file, and more detailed ones here and here. I especially advise you to try fiddling with output, fullfixed & fullresolution (those two work together, and I think they're what you need), possibly hwscale, as well as the scalers. I know this is very vague but, as I said, this really depends on your hardware.

And good to hear that it is finally starting to work.

What did you do? (this might help people who have a similar problem and find this thread with a search)

And yes, it's a great game, with some extremely difficult puzzles. I'll have to replay it someday, but it's still too fresh for me now.
