'Grand Theft Auto' Yanked for Steamy Content

Quote:

Morning Edition, July 21, 2005 · A best selling video game has been given an adult only rating by the industry, after the video game maker admitted that it contained hidden sex scenes. After first denying it, the makers of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas owned up to the secret sex scenes, which can be unlocked with easily available software. With 12 million sold, Wal-Mart and other retailers who don't carry adults-only titles are now busy yanking the game off shelves.

That's so silly. I'm sure Rockstar couldn't care less, the game has already sold a ton of copies. The only thing Rockstar did that I disagree with was lying about the "adult content" being their creation. They claimed it was all the work of the mod community on PC. Their little lie didn't last long... Soon enough people were unlocking the content on the PS2 and XBox versions of the game with cheat code devices. Rockstar made the controversial scenes themselves, and hid them within the game. Still, I think they're only at fault for lying...the Grand Theft Auto games should be rated AO anyway, but I despise how Wal-Mart and other lame places refuse to carry those titles.

It should be yanked for having sex on top of a shotgun, what is that between her legs! :D

SamNMax 07-21-2005 10:20 PM

Ha! And you said I was stupid for buying all versions! These'll be rare in due time! Who's laughing now?!

James 07-21-2005 11:46 PM

ban this filth :D.

what the hell did they expect if they put that type of content in there?

sethsez 07-22-2005 12:13 AM

Fully clothed sex, hidden deep within the game that requires the user to hack into it with a device like Pro Action Replay?

Yes, this does deserve the same rating as pornography.

Why wasn't there an uproar over God of War, anyway? Hell, even The Guy Game didn't get this much attention and that featured real nudity (until it was pulled from shelves for having an underage model).

smashing 07-22-2005 12:52 AM

Hmm... is there a possibility that there's actually a pornographical half-life 2 mod hidden somewhere as well? Are all the software developer telling the truth when they go for ESRB ratings approval?

I think the issue here isn't really about the adult content per se. Rather it's more about the honesty issue. GTA could potentially just open a can of worms for their deniance of the content.

Now, fully clothed sexual scene? No thanks... it's as good as the totally black screen in Fable I guess. Man, I'd rather play some adult games then to get a accidental gratification in a supposedly innocent game.

Kolorabi 07-22-2005 01:51 AM

I guess someone should tell the ESRB about the nude patch for The Sims.

Edit: More detailed information here - http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=60138

And an official release from the ESRB here: http://www.esrb.org/about_updates.asp#7-20-05

Mostly, this is just laughable, but I'm slightly worried about this: "Furthermore, the ESRB calls on the computer and video game industry to proactively protect their games from illegal modifications by third parties, particularly when they serve to undermine the accuracy of the rating."

ROFL I can't stop laughing at this stupid story.

A game where you can shoot/run down/chainsaw/gold club to death anyone you like.

You can also procure hookers etc etc

and they are getting their knickers in a twist about some non-erotic fully clothed sex scenes that you can only access with an unauthorised hack

Mainstream media can be so stupid

Lucien21 07-22-2005 02:54 AM

Even funnier:

Quote:

The M-rated version of Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is selling like hot coffee on Ebay. The now discontinued version that includes access to the 'Hot Coffee' modification has been bid up to as high as $86 U.S. on the auction site.
p.s The game is rated 18 in the UK anyway.

Erwin_Br 07-22-2005 03:01 AM

In the Netherlands it's rated 18+ as well. But only because of 'graphic violence'. The label doesn't even mention sex/nudity at all. I guess that's the difference with the USA, where nudity is more shocking than violence.

Wait a minute, that's an entirely different picture of what I've seen.

Here's a movie: <link removed> (This one does contain nudity)

God how embarrassing this all is. The politicians don't blink an eye at the random violence in GTA, but have an anuerysm over the embedded sex scenes.

Well, seeing as how all these suits are gearing up for the 2006 election cycle, we're probably in for a lot more sound and fury over nothing as they set their sights on oh so easy targets like video games. All I can say is et tu, Hillary? (of course, we all know she's polishing up her middle of the road credentials for a 2008 run).

That's just ridiculous, the industry would never agree on that. Btw, there's a story on Wired.

Tobbe 07-22-2005 06:55 AM

This is so ridiculous!

Lucien21 07-22-2005 06:57 AM

Loved this quote

Quote:

under AO for "adults only" -- raising the minimum age to 18, the year at which a delicate teen becomes less susceptible to the harmful influence of computer-generated cartoon sex.
There is an entire community of "Modders" out there that could be quaking in their boots.

However the industry would be shooting itself in the foot to try and stamp it out as it supports the sales of their games.

People bought Quake years after it's release to play or mod their own levels.

You just wish Hilary would shut the hell up on stuff she knows sod all about. (not that that would leave much :D )

Talas 07-22-2005 08:20 AM

The ESRB doesn't even play the games, this is a joke. But anyway, only the current version is getting the AO rating... Rockstar is updating the game to remove the mod and retain the Mature rating.

In the end Rockstar gets away with less than a slap on the hand, massive promotion for a game that is already selling millions and more sales in the next few days and weeks.

For all practical purposes, isn't material that you need a hack to access pretty much the same as a mod? I just can't see why the developer should be responsible for something like that.

And is it just me, or is Hillary becoming more senile in her old age? I guess she's just trying to show her moral values for her presidential run, but it seems like every time I start to not dislike her as much she goes and says something totally insane like this. If she would stop acting like a crazy old bitch, I might be able to get behind her in 2008.

Oh well. I guess we can't really blame the politicians. Most of the people in Washington haven't been exposed to anything resembling popular culture since the 1980s. They probably don't even know what GTA is.

Hi Mag, she's definitely not my favorite potential candidate, but I guess she feels she has to swing to the center to have any shot at the presidency in 2008. And this stupid move she's making smacks of Bill Clinton's Sista Soulja moment in 1992. Maybe at somepoint she'll remember she's a member of the democrats and not the republican lite.
